The idea behind the Backstacks was conceived many years ago in a dormitory called Swig. Nic, Taimur, Sam and I sat on practice amps, and for a while Sam was limited to a set of bongos. We jammed a lot and came up with a lot of riffs, and we didn’t have much direction but it didn’t really matter. We were content. Our rehearsal space improved over time — for a bit we practiced in the garage of a house called Stucco where we literally stood on a small halfpipe. We briefly practiced in the basement of a house called Blue before losing those privileges. We ultimately found a home in the garage of Fishbowl. We played a few parties, we played The Hut, The Claron. Our crowds were rowdy, once knocking over a PA and unplugging Taimur on multiple occasions. Absurdity.
Somehow that brings us to today. We started playing again, writing and ultimately recording an album. Life is more complicated. We don’t have a full time drummer and Nic is at full gas in two bands. It’s stressful and scheduling is a nightmare, but it’s genuinely very fun. It’s what keeps this all together, we can’t help ourselves.
On 12/16 we’re playing Mercury Lounge and releasing our first song, Walk Up. Come through if you’re in NYC. Link in band page bio. taken in Mercury Lounge by @nickvilter_
