IT’S OUT!

Today “I Don’t Want to Go Home: The Oral History of the Stone Pony,” with foreword by Bruce Springsteen, has been unleashed into the wild. It’s a wild and raucous story of rock and roll, resilience and revival, of a club that Springsteen called home and a seaside town called its beating heart.

But @the_stone_pony book is also a love song to my home state, which has had such an outsized influence on music history that these 300 pages are just a small sliver.

I share this picture every year: this was our high school, 25 years ago today, where post its pressed to the glass windows of the admin offices were our only way to know whose parents were safe, whose had called in, and the agonizing absence of those who hadn’t yet been heard from: by @nickwouldgo

18 years ago, I moved into my first Boarders locker. I called it my beach house. It was two blocks from the beach, had outdoor showers. Had birthdays and proms here, surfed hurricanes and floated through many a flat spell.

The @springsteencenter American Music Awards puts on a show to rival the Rock hall, with the unexpected onstage collaborations that feel like they come right off the stage of The Stone Pony. To close the night, @drdre grabbed a tambourine and shared a mic with @stevievanzandt @steveearle to rock “People Have the Power,” with @springsteen and @thisispattismith by @nickwouldgo

In 2016, I was stuck on deadline in the newsroom two days after Prince died and had to give up my tickets to @springsteen show that night in Brooklyn, his first since Prince’s passing. Bruce famously began the concert with “Purple Rain” in tribute, and I’ve never gotten over missing that moment.

But this cover at the end of an intense, visceral and moving show, which Bruce introduced as “one for the maestro,” at least partially made up for it, particularly with the dueling solos of @tommorello and @realnilslofgren (stay till the end of the video to watch their mastery). by @nickwouldgo

Twenty-seven years ago, down the street from this beach, I heard these six notes live for the first time in the lot behind @the_stone_pony and it changed my life. From that point on, I’d never stop chasing the rush and restorative euphoria of live music, from punk shows at VFW halls to Springsteen at Giants Stadium.

So it was a much needed, life affirming full circle moment to see @blink182 back in Asbury Park all these years later, even if I couldn’t join the pit this time.

Massive thanks and congrats to @donnellysea @dannybones64 @sweetwoodatl for yet another triumphant @seahearnow. Can wait for next September 🤘 taken in Asbury Park, New Jersey by @nickwouldgo
