ALOE WATER
For all the vain ones. For all the anxious ones. Or if you’re like me, for both.

This tonic will not only help you glow from the inside out and relax the fine lines in your face, but it will hydrate and cool your body, easing the nervous system into a chill state.

But don’t take my word for it. Try for yourself…

Ingredients:
A thick, 2-inch piece of fresh aloe vera leaf
The juice of two juicy lemons
4 tbsp pure agave syrup, maple, or honey
Filtered or spring water

Directions:
1. Wash and dry your produce. Slice the green skin carefully from the aloe leaf, starting with removing the sharp spikes. Add the clear, jelly meat into a blender with the lemon juice and agave. Fill the blender with pure water to the 1000ml line of your blender (or 32 oz/4 cup/1 litre).
2. Cover and blend on medium-high until smooth, about 15-20 seconds.
3. Pour over ice and enjoy!

Makes 1 litre. Save the skins to run on your face and chest while enjoying your aloe water. Let the gel dry and rinse it off 30 minutes later.

One year ago I arrived in New York City with 7 oversized suitcases, 4 Mexican street cats, and 1 very best friend @victoria.voges - it was a tranquil and rainy morning.

My dear friend Alicia let us softly land in her home in Brooklyn Heights for about a week while we awaited the move to our Manhattan apartment. I was hungry to create a big life for myself and simultaneously nursing a daily panic attack from all the upheaval and energetic transition from a small colonial town to a bustling metropolis.

Fast forward to right now - as I’m in my plush bed, down pillows, cat in lap - I have been mentally taking inventory of all the sweet reverie New York has given me, and the lessons she’s shown me as well.

The things I’m most grateful for learning this year:
1. Stay open. Things do not unravel as we expect them to. How boring would life be if they did? Life can be experienced as an adventure if we are mentally expecting sweet surprises.
2. Stay soft. The intense concentration of diverse culture and thought is a reflection that there is no “right” way of thinking or behaving. We can all learn from each other and evolve from mutual understanding, even if we disagree. Especially if we disagree. Then we can accept, soften and live in love.
3. Stay focused. Distractions happen, life happens, time slips away, and all the while keep our eye on the prize. The gifts will arise when we prioritize creating our dreams in the physical.
4. Flow. The seasons we experience in life are all temporary. It’s necessary to experience (and actually FEEL) the challenging times and good times in order to grow, and I intend to keep growing for as long as I live.
5. Trust thyself and trust life. Making this move was scary. I had many people speaking negatively about the move and I had no idea how I was going to make ends meet with such a significant cost of living increase - AND at the same time, I trusted my ability to make it work. And it’s working :) NYC welcomed us with open arms.

There are other lessons worth mentioning, but I’ll save that for next time.
