🇸🇳 Here are some additional photos of the extraction and harvesting of salt from Lac Rose, around 35 km from Dakar in Senegal, taken in March during our report on the “Ville Verte” project with @adrienmarotte for @reporterre_media ( Link in Bio) Amadou Tamboura, a 28-year-old Malian salt collector at Lac Rose, in the commune of Tivaouane Peulh-Niague, on 14 March 2026. Using a shovel, he breaks up the crust of salt that has formed at the bottom of the lake, then scoops the ‘white gold’ from the water’s depths into wicker baskets before transferring it to a canoe – gruelling work carried out in extremely difficult conditions. But his livelihood is now under threat as it is closely linked to various climatic and environmental factors. Pollution, flooding and wind are all constraints that have a direct impact on the lake and salt production. The ‘Ville verte’ project and the felling of casuarina trees represent a further cause for concern among these salt workers, who had already suffered significant losses in recent years due to Covid and, above all, the floods of late 2022, which made work almost impossible because the lake’s water level had risen sharply.Just like the tourism sector, the many people whose livelihoods depend on the salt from Lac Rose fear that the ‘Ville Verte’ project will have nothing but a negative impact on the lake’s fragile ecosystem.© Nicolas RÉMÉNÉ / @lepictorium_agency #lacrose #senegal #dakar #saltwaterfishing #reportage by @nicolas_remene

🇸🇳🇩🇪 The new Goethe-Institut in Dakar was inaugurated this weekend in the presence of Burkinabé architect Francis Kéré, the building’s designer. After several years of construction, the new headquarters showcases sustainable architecture using local materials (earth, laterite) and offering bioclimatic solutions adapted to Dakar’s climate, while hosting cultural, educational, and artistic activities.
