Happy birthday @PhantomOfTheOpera!

Being asked to write the editorial for @andrewlloydwebber’s Phantom of the Opera: A Behind-the-Mask look at the Global Phenomenon (out 29 October) was a wonderful full circle moment for me. I will be forever grateful to @jamesscottmcknight for asking me, to co-author extraordinaire @katmaher19, to the amazing @lwentertainment team for their support and of course to everyone who has ever worked on Phantom over the past 40 years. What a labour of love – so proud to be part of the celebrations for this incredible show.

I’m only a year or two (ahem) older than Phantom of the Opera and it is fair to say it has soundtracked my entire life. From singing along to the original London cast recording in the car with my mum to watching numerous productions with my fellow theatre kids (@hayleybremner how many times have you seen it now?) to the years I spent at RUG, working on both Phantom and Love Never Dies alongside some of the most talented colleagues I ever did have.

While researching the book I had some incredible opportunities: digging through archive boxes to unearth treasures; seeing costumes and props up close (complete with worn-down soles and names in collars); rediscovering the excitement and energy of the original Creative Team’s vision and seeing first-hand how this story continues to inspire today’s incredible productions and visionary new concepts.

Musical theatre is, I think, a pretty unique art form in terms of its ability to be constantly reimagined, but there aren’t many shows where the energy and passion of each reinvention always seems perfectly balanced with the spirit and authenticity of the original vision. Phantom is one of them – wherever this show goes, the romance at the heart of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s original story is always there. It has been a great privilege to revisit the early days of the show and my own memories, while also seeing Phantom through new eyes.

Happy birthday Phantom. May your splendour never fade. #Phantom40 by @nicolaslavin

Happy happy US book birthday to @phantomopera’s jaw-droppingly beautiful coffee table! This is such a gorgeous addition to the literary line-up and is chock full of never before seen photos, letters from former and current cast, designers, and members of the creative and production teams. I am so honored to have a few pages in it too, talking about my experience with Phantom and all of the love I put into OUR STRANGE DUET! I am soooo happy that this stunner is out today— it’s truly a love letter to the show!

@katmaher19 and @nicolaslavin— our kiddos look so good together!!!

Never do posts like this but first day using @merwaveuk products and am pretty impressed! Only about 10 mins longer than my usual hair routine (lollll hair routine… I can feel you rolling your eyes @sophiestella26 😂) pics taken at different times through the day. Hair has frizzed up a bit through the day but nowhere near as much as usual and have had so many nice comments. Whoop #curlyhair #curlygirlmethod #wavyhair by @nicolaslavin
