Freida McFadden - The Witch - release date 6th October 2026. NetGalley Arc Review (spoiler free)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5

The title and cover grabbed my attention immediately. I am a big Freida fan, and The Witch appeared somewhat out of the norm for Freida’s books. I love witch stories, especially around autumn, so I knew I had to read this ASAP.

It follows a dual timeline of two women — one from 1692 onwards and one in the present day — all surrounding the Pemberton household. I loved being pulled into the past and the 17th-century era, and I genuinely felt like I was there. Witches, you say? No such thing! But how interesting to feel part of the witch trial era, where hysteria was rife and little medical knowledge was known.

Freida delivers on the twists and turns and her sleight-of-hand chapters that keep you reading chapter after chapter. You gasp and turn pages like there is no tomorrow!

Freida lovers — you are in for a treat. 🧙‍♀️🍂

I rate this book a strong 4 out of 5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ by @nicolavsthetbr

🎂🥩Maneater by Ellie Graves - published 2026

I picked this book up due to the cover and title. I love some female revenge!

This book wasn’t totally what I was expecting. There were few red herrings and misdirection so the storyline was very ‘open’.
There was enough there to keep me reading and wanting to know what was going to happen next! The main characters I had mixed feelings about, but the ending 👀 it was worth it. Like the food- this book is absolutely palatable!

A solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Synopsis ⬇️

Revenge is tough to swallow...

Things for Renee Landis are finally looking up. She just quit her dead-end job at a chicken shop after landing the coveted role of junior chef at London’s pristine NOVA restaurant.

But it’s not the restaurant that draws Renee in - it’s the executive chef. Gracie Fitzgerald is as legendary as she is secretive, known for her succulent, signature dishes and the notorious methods in which she runs her kitchen. No one can touch her workspace with bare hands. No other chef can taste her signature dishes. And no one, under any circumstances, is allowed to enter her personal freezer…

🚨🚨Fellow book lovers… I need your help. 📚😂

I may have made a boo boo.

I’ve listened to Incidents Around the House on audio up to about 75% — my FIRST EVER audiobook — and I have absolutely hated it. 😩

Now I can’t tell if it’s the book… or if I’ve just discovered that I am, in fact, not an audiobook girly. 😂

BUT… I already own the physical copy. 👀

So do I try to salvage the book by picking up the physical copy and finishing the last 25%?

Or do I just accept defeat and DNF the whole thing? 😭

Fellow readers… what would you do?! 👇🏼

Gunner by Alan Parks - Released July 2025

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

If you enjoy historical fiction, WW2, Glasgow crime based stories- this is for you!

Synopsis

A brand new crime series from the award-winning author of the Harry McCoy books.

March 1941. Joseph Gunner is back on the streets of Glasgow after being wounded on the front lines in France.

Keeping the pain in his leg at bay with the help of morphine, Gunner, a former detective, is hoping to lie low as the Luftwaffe begins bombing Glasgow.

But when he runs into his old boss Drummond, he is persuaded to help examine a body found in the wreckage. When it turns out to be that of a German, mutilated to disguise his identity, Gunner reluctantly agrees to investigate.

As he begins to hunt for the truth Gunner runs into old flames and bitter enemies, before finding himself embroiled in a high-level conspiracy that reaches far beyond his hometown of Glasgow.

Partly inspired by the true story of Rudolf Hess’s secret mission to broker appeasement with Britain during the Second World War, Gunner is an atmospheric and addictive new thriller from one of Britain’s best-loved writers.

I enjoy historical fiction, especially if it centres around WW1 and WW2.

I enjoyed the Glasgow dialect, the somber feelings around the home front during the war and those insights into criminal gangs around that time. Gunner I think is quite a complicated character, with deep physical and psychological wounds who finds himself dragged into war politics, spies and conspiracies. What I love about Gunner is how he is portrayed as not a classic hero, but a man with trauma and flaws.

I’m looking forward to reading the second book Deception which was released this year.
