PERMISSION Work 01 - Ongoing Series 36 × 40 in | Acrylic on Canvas I have always been interested in representing Black women, not simply as subjects, but as people with inner worlds, histories, tenderness, strength, beauty, and stories worth remembering. This work marks the beginning of a personal series exploring Black womanhood through different moments, relationships, and experiences. For this series, I chose Nina Simone as my muse. In 2022, I wrote down Nina’s words in the notes on my phone. Four years later, those words are still with me. She was brilliant, uncompromising, complicated, tender, courageous, and deeply human. Watching her has taught me to stand up for myself, trust my convictions, and become more honest about who I am. For this painting, I didn’t want to recreate the photograph of Nina and her daughter. I wanted to paint the feeling I saw in it; the quiet intimacy, tenderness, and love between a mother and child. Perhaps that is what Nina has given me too. SOLD❗️ Now available in prints only Nina Simone will always be one of my greatest muses. #ninasimonepaintings #artiststatement #femaleartistinnigeria by @nicole.itoya
