“Glass Ceiling, Desert,” oil on linen, 40X30

I set parameters with care, laying a stable foundation for moments like the one in this video. I paint through the structure in an act of self-assertion, flipping the table, an f#@!-this moment to anything trying to pin me down. It’s a refusal to paint myself into a corner. It’s me saying that autonomy is of the utmost importance. That includes making the art I want to make. It means that my vision matters, no matter preconceptions about my gender and age. I paint.

Reinventing Home
I’m interested in the moment when a place that appears stable is about to
change or is in the midst of changing.
My paintings use architectural forms, shifting landscapes, geometry and
color to explore the idea of home in flux.
I often begin with perspective and carefully constructed space, then
disrupt that structure through painterly gesture, sharp angles, and fragmentation.
The result is a landscape that exists in the realm of magical realism.
This is the world I’m calling Reinventing Home.
Welcome to my studio. Available work can be viewed through the link in my bio.

What does the idea of ‘home’ mean to you? “Glass Ceiling, Boat,” 36in. X 48 in., oil on linen, 2026

Reinventing Home —

As I reflect on my past, I move forward by investigating new directions in painting. I think about what I’ve learned and where to place my attention.

Looking through my exhibition history, one relationship stands out: my long connection with Bowery Gallery in New York.
Seven solo exhibitions there became an important part of my development as a painter.
While the imagery and subject matter have changed over the years, I’m still interested in the ways expressive gesture, structure, and perception shape how we experience an image.
I’m grateful to have this documentation of an earlier chapter of my work.

A glimpse into how one of my architectural paintings develops.
I’m interested in the tension between something carefully constructed and something that feels unstable, intuitive or unexpected.
Geometry gives me structure.
Painting gives me a way to break it and build something new. Save this if you’d like to see more of the painting process.

I’m Nicole Maynard, a painter working in New Jersey centrally located between the art communities of Philadelphia and New York City.
My practice centers on architectural abstract landscapes in oil.
I use perspective, geometry, color theory, and recognizable architectural forms as starting points, but I’m ultimately interested in what happens when those systems begin to shift.
Houses, landscapes, and moving boxes recur in my work as images of transition and the changing meaning of home.
I’ll be sharing new paintings, studio process, older work, and the ideas behind the paintings here over the coming months.
Thank you for being here.

“The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by Katasushika Hokusai depicts three boats in a stormy sea; a large wave appears to be about to overtake them. My painting, “Waves,” also freezes such a timely moment. My slanted, turquoise waves are crashing over a bizarre architectural space containing windows filled with various scenes, as if giant Polaroids or the glowing signs of Times Square. One window shows the simple outline of a house on a clear day, another a close-up of a glass doorknob, and a third shows a partially open interior door.

20x
I’ve moved 20 times in pursuit of opportunities and new experiences. It’s an especially American endeavor, this spirit of self-determination and discovery involving place. It makes me feel like the American painter I am in this time of globalization.

I’ve lived in houses, apartments, condos, and a camper. I’ve lived where there is lake effect snow, in the Miami heat, and in New England states with beautiful fall foliage. At this point, the most radical thing is to stay. Now I own a house that has my studio in it, and my penchant for exploration is satisfied by trips in a camper which also functions as a mobile studio. I like the contradictory challenge and simplicity, focusing on what is important while seeing things from a new perspective.

Stay tuned for the adventures to come!

A small work,
intimate,
at the moment of disruption.

“When lightning strikes, maybe once, maybe twice
Oh, and it lights up the night
And you see your gypsy
You see your gypsy

To the gypsy that remains
Faces freedom with a little fear
I have no fear, I have only love” - Stevie Nicks

Some painting passages are slow, meditative (this video is sped up). I don’t use tape to paint straight lines because I like to build the edge, to fight for it.

Later, I will decide what to keep and what to disrupt. I don't know what the breaking point will be, or what I will lose in the future. I'm admittedly fussing around here, trying to find the line. At other moments I can just plant it. Both approaches have their place. In the end, I know what to do. The right thing becomes clear.

Notes:
Tape can be a tool; tape can be used purposefully and it isn’t an inferior process to what I do. Artists choose methods to get what they need.

Check back in to see moments where the brushwork is gestural.
