Still feeling the great vibe from last night’s launch of (Re)Told - at Reference Point - a new publication from RCA EDI Dept, an amazing visual and written archive that celebrates the contributions of African, Caribbean, and Mixed Heritage students, staff, and alumni at the Royal College of Art.
Such an honour and privilege to be included!

Kerry James Marshall:
The Histories
Royal Academy of Arts
8/11/25

Main Galleries
20/9/25 - 18/1/26

One of my favourite artist’s exhibitions was one I couldn't miss, especially being the first time here in the UK!

Such a wonderful practice grounded in a deep engagement with the histories of art.

‘I’ve always wanted to be a history painter on a grand scale like Giotto and Gericault.’

Pleased to share the publication of my article in BlackInk Magazine, Issue 6, published by the Serendipity Institute for Black Arts and Heritage, featuring Carol Leeming. I explore her remarkable career in the performing arts.

The article ‘Rising Up the Crooked Ladder: An Artist Spotlight on Carol Leeming’ aligns perfectly with this year's Black History Month theme: 'Stand Firm in Power and Pride.'

Full details are on my writing blog in Linktree - see bio above.

Yesterday, (19/6) serendipity was at play as I only discovered Writing the Unwriteable: Softcore Journaling for fiction and nonfiction during the afternoon.

Reading 'Come journal with me! Collage, diary, and fiction writing prompts, to aid wellbeing, connection, and compassion for others and ourselves,' felt too intriguing to miss!

The event was facilitated by Abby Tarttelin, of @irlcreativehealth @thecreateplace a community arts space, a launch pad for people to share skills, to create, and to have fun. The theme was: it's and not but: reconciling irreconcilable ideas.

So, while we were getting into the collage zone, I discovered to my delight that the two lovely sisters sitting opposite - Anika and Rohema - lived in Highbury, Islington where I grew up and they went to the same secondary school as I did - Starcross, now known as Elizabeth Garrett Anderson school for Girls. Small world indeed!😊

The vibe: 'softness itself. Non-mastery, non-completion, anti-productivity, non-compulsory. Feel free to be creatively meaningless, incomplete, and in-expert,' allowed for just the right balance of participation.

So the above collage (the sixth one I've made this month) marks a kind of revitalization, a return to an art form I dabbled in way back in 2015, this time my love of words means including text.

I left the workshop feeling uplifted and refreshed.

Zine Sanctuary: Listening In, Reaching Out, at The Mulberry Hall, St. Margaret’s House, East London, a drop-in zine library and zine-making workshop by Artizine for Creativity & Well-being Week 2025.

Really enjoyed this event yesterday which invited us to slow down, listen in, and explore the gentle creative power of zine-making as a way to document your inner world and connect with others.

The Zine Sanctuary was a space to reflect, discover, and play, with no pressure to perform or produce.

I’d never made a zine before and so this introduction was a real pleasure, doing something new and artsy in a communal setting. I made my first zine and will definitely add zine making to my art practice.

Images 1-10 are mostly from Ionna who facilitates a Zine Making Club at The Gallery Cafe.

Requiem pays tribute to Khadija Saye and remembers the tragedy of the Grenfell Tower fire.

Tate commissioned artist Chris Ofili to create an artwork for the North Staircase at Tate Britain. Ofili considered the significance of painting directly onto the walls of a public building and wanted to choose a subject that affected us as a nation. Requiem is a dream-like mural, residing from his poetic reflections.

When I visited the Tate and viewed this masterpiece I experienced a range of mixed feelings from sadness, anger, grief as well as being quite mesmerised by the mural’s incredible beauty and its stunning impact. I actually stayed for a while not just to view but to remember those who lost their lives in the Grenfell Tower fire.

Visited The Time is Always Now: Artists Reframe the Black Figure at National Portrait Gallery, Charing Cross, London.
This is a major study of the Black figure and its representation in contemporary art. The exhibition, curated by Ekow Eshun, showcases the work of contemporary artists from the African diaspora, including Michael Armitage, Lubaina Himid, Kerry James Marshall, and many more!

Such a rich and culturally outstanding exhibition. Loved it!
