Our family will always remember the day our brave boy, Matthew, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

T1D is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. There is no cure for T1D, so those with it must rely on lifelong insulin therapy to manage their blood sugar levels and prevent life-threatening complications. It’s very serious, no doubt – but, still relatively misunderstood by the public. I saw this on Instagram - and it breaks it down nicely: in our house, juice boxes save his life. The medicine that saves him can also kill him. His phone isn’t a phone. It’s a medical device. We count carbs not calories. And, asking the questions: Are you high? Or, do you feel low? are completely normal in our house. There are no days off. T1D requires devices, technology and low blood sugar supplies with him everywhere and always. This is hard. And as you can imagine it’s the toughest for Matthew.

No one ever expects to become a Riley family … But, if you are a Riley family, you know how lucky you are to have Riley. Last month, our little family bravery shared Matthew’s story at the Red for Our Kids Gala. I’m SO proud of these #beckerboys for saying yes to joining me in front of 650 people on stage to fundraise for this special hospital. Please consider donating to the Every Child Deserves Riley campaign to ensure Hoosier kids have access to the best medical care available.

This wasn’t a speech I expected to give. 🎤

I’m sharing my remarks after being named the 2026 @prsahoosier Chapter Catalyst Award recipient because this moment reminded me why I fell in love with this profession in the first place.

The Catalyst Award recognizes communications professionals who demonstrate ethical, strategic and creative public relations while advancing our profession through leadership, mentorship and community impact.

What made this recognition especially meaningful was reading the nomination my team wrote on my behalf. As I reached the final paragraphs, I found myself reflecting on these words:

“Nicole Pence Becker is, in every sense, a catalyst. She advances the profession through strategic excellence, elevates those around her through mentorship and leadership, and strengthens her community through meaningful engagement.”

And then this sentence:

“Her work demonstrates a clear understanding that public relations is not only about influence, but about responsibility.”

Reading those words made me reflect on the kind of leader I hope to be.

Nearly nine years ago, I founded @pencemediagroup with a simple belief: communications has the power to build trust, strengthen organizations and create meaningful impact. Along the way, I’ve learned that our greatest responsibility isn’t simply telling great stories: it’s investing in people, leading with integrity and leaving our profession stronger than we found it.

To the PRSA Hoosier Chapter, thank you for this incredible honor. To my remarkable PMG team, thank you for believing in our vision and challenging me to become a better leader every day. This recognition is a reflection of what we’ve built together.

He’s all in, all the time.

I’m incredibly grateful for the way @jedwardbecker pours into our family, especially the boys. From F1 race weekends and football Sundays to action movie marathons and family adventures. 🖤❤️💙💚💛
