Life lately: feeling a-fucking-live again! I cannot properly describe how brutal the past 3/3.5 (4? I don’t even know) years have been for me. Mentally, physically, financially, relationships, career. The meme of the dog sitting in the burning room saying “this is fine” has been me. Sometimes life gives you lemons and you just don’t manage to turn them into lemonade. Sometimes survival mode is just survival mode. Sometimes shit just sucks.

But this year has shown sweetness. The years I spent dealing with difficult things, are bearing fruit. I feel alive again in ways I haven’t felt in a long, long time. Out of ultra survival mode (!!!!) and on a journey back to myself, to reconnecting with loved ones I’ve missed for too long, to enjoyment, goofy & silly lightness, creating things just for fun, and so much more. Taking photos again to remember it all by, and counting my many blessings.

Small steps at a time (though aren’t small steps actually big steps?). And the ups still come with downs, and steps forward still come with steps back or sideways. But I find myself so much more equipped to handle it, and so much more hopeful. I keep telling people that I feel like a little lamb just newly born, taking their first steps into the morning sun, and it really does feel that way.

Rebuilding, babyyyyyyy 🐑🐑🐑🦋🦋🦋

Hello sweet friends! After a challenging period and a lot of doubting whether we would reach out for help, my partner Kris and I have decided to raise funds for their recovery from long-COVID, which they’ve been dealing with for the past 1.5 years. Information is in the slides, and the full story is on the GoFundMe page (in my bio + stories) and over on @kriswasalbezet account as well. Any donation or share means the world to us both. 💛 GoFundMe | Mutual Aid Request

Ten things that are good right now, to counter the many things that are less good right now, personally and globally. In no particular order and with not everything photographed:

1. The combination of sunshine and colder weather.
2. My hair in the growing out phase, doing a gezellige flippy floppy curly thing.
3. @kriswasalbezet doing well post top surgery! And the sweetness and intimacy that comes with taking care of someone you love, and having the honor to witness and share in their happiness 💛
4. Richie and Flits. These two drive me crazy sometimes, but they also make everything soooo much better.
5. Being able to rely on friends even when they’re thousands of miles away. (Thanks, technology)
6. Being able to hear my parents’ voices. (Thanks again, technology)
7. A walk in the pouring rain together with a friend, who made me feel human again. (@ Technology, sometimes it’s good for my mental health to ignore you, sorry not sorry)
8. Playing card games.
9. Having warm, dry clothing when it’s cold and wet out.
10. Taking a nap because I needed it. A privilege, a joy, and a radical act of self love. by @nicoleromer

There’s a stiffness settling into my bones lately, a slight dullness taking hold in my mind.

The combination of working in isolation (whether from home or the office), a deep craving for social contact that continues to elude me, gray days, and the general endless slog of a world on fire is a lot. I feel it and you probably feel it, too.

Tasks we used to do without a second thought (replying to text messages, answering the phone, opening the mail) now drain our energy. Our days mostly feel the same, one long copy-paste of ongoing existence.

Y’all, it’s a lot. And on some days I am better at handling it than others. Some weeks my self care process is on point, other weeks I am suddenly unsure when the last time is that I did even one kind thing for myself. It’s ups and downs, and we’re all in it.

Today was a good day. It was a productive one, one of those where I felt empowered and in control. It’s after 4pm and as I work, my mind feels bright and energized, a striking contrast to many other days. The sun is shining and as it sets, shadows begin the play on the wall in front of me. A song comes on and the bright tunes have me wiggling in my desk chair. And so I take a moment to stand up and dance. Something I’ve missed so much, something I cannot wait to do again one day, surrounded by a sea of strangers.

I haven’t been the best at self care lately but today I danced for a few minutes and it was cathartic. Filming it felt silly and sweet and free. And all of it made life feel a tiny bit lighter, even if just for today.

ID: A white wall with part of a red painting visible. The painting is bright and has yellow splatters of paint on it. The wall the painting hangs on is partially lit by sunlight. The shadow of a plant is visible, as well as the shadow of a body. The body dances to a song that’s playing but muted in this video. Towards the left is an open doorway. The wall in the back is covered in various framed art pieces. taken in Amsterdam, Netherlands by @nicoleromer

Soooo this happened! (English below)

Translation:

I wrote a piece for VICE on ethnic profiling by the Royal Military Police at border control. Last month, the court of first instance in The Hague ruled on the matter. Their ruling is one that, and many others, find highly problematic, so I wrote about what was said, what it means and what we can do about it.

I don’t have a full translation of the article, but I’m hoping translation tools can serve those interested in reading it well! A little summary and spoiler alert here: the court ruled that including ethnicity as part of a risk profile at border control does not constitute an infringement of the prohibition of discrimination. They acknowledge that while there is a realistic expectation that people of color will be held up and interrogated at border control, this does not violate Dutch law.

Check out the full article if you dare. I am admittedly pretty damn proud of myself for this one. 💛 taken in Amsterdam, Netherlands by @nicoleromer

Podcast episode alert! I had the absolute joy and honor of being a guest on @salt_thepodcast ✨

When I had my first call with Stella from I was struck by her wonderfully calming energy and her immense knowledge. I just knew we’d be creating something special and now I can share that we did!

In this episode we talk about my work at @neighborhoodfeminists and how we tackle period poverty. We also dive into intersectional feminism, the white savior complex, period stigma and shame, uteruses, our favorite books (mine is by @jedidiahjenkins) and the people who inspire us.

To me, conversations like this one bring healing and renewed energy. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did.

Check out @salt_thepodcast for more info and see my bio for the episode link! 💛

ICYMI on instastories, I have a new job!

On February 1st I started as coordinator at @neighborhoodfeminists 💥Neighborhood Feminists is an Amsterdam-based intersectional feminist organization that organizes local, direct-impact community projects.

What does that mean? It means that instead of just talking the talk, this organization gets to it and gets stuff done. (I’m so here for it 🙌🏾) Like their Dignity Kits project, which tackles period poverty. Did you know the following facts?

❕In Amsterdam 1 in 5 people live at or below the poverty line.

❕ In The Netherlands, nearly 1 in 10 people who menstruate experience period poverty.

❕This means that these people have to choose to go without hygiene essentials in order to purchase other basic necessities such as food.

I didn’t know all of this. But I do now. And this is one of the issues we tackle at NF. With our Dignity Kits project, we collect and distribute essential products to people facing great risk in the Amsterdam area. In addition to working on this project, I also helped launch our first ever virtual campaign, which started on Monday and will run for the month of March! (This has been very exciting 💃🏾) Our goal with the campaign is to raise awareness for intersectional feminist issues and to get monthly donors so we can continue to fund the Dignity Kits project.

This first month has been a whirlwind. Coming from a corporate background to grassroots organizing, I’m learning so much already. Community organizing, virtual campaign-ing, mapping out future projects, we’re doing it all and I couldn’t be happier. 💛

Check out the @neighborhoodfeminists page if you want to stay up to date, donate, or just get a little peep of what we’re doing 👀

Seeing this photo makes me feel relaxed. It feels like one of those deep-belly-breaths, breathing in
deep
deep
deeper, filling yourself up with air before you release:
slowly.
slow
even
slower.

Seeing this photo makes me feel happy. It was a chilly winter’s day; one of the rare sunny ones. We took a walk; my partner was in the mood to take some photos of nature, and we were both in the mood to get out of our COVID-lockdown-stuck-in-the-house-24-7 lives. We cycled towards the forest, our breath coming out in plumes before us. We walked along a gravel track, stones and dirt crunching beneath wool socks encased in rain boots. It was just us two. The potholes were filled with frozen ice, and each one that we got to, they would take a photo and then we would both jump on top, marvelling at the veins of cracked ice underfoot. Winter. Crazy as it makes me sometimes, there sure is something beautiful about it.

I wonder why it is that sunlight feels so much more special on closed eyelids. As if when I close my eyes, the tender light-deprived skin on my face somehow opens its pores, beckoning in the warmth. “Hello, it’s nice to see you again.” I walked that way for a while, eyes closed, lips parted in an automatic smile. Hands behind my back, fingers interlocked, their camera shutter click-click-clicking as they photographed grass, ice, trees, stones.

I climbed up a small elevation and crouched down in the grass. The mud squelched beneath my boots. I sat for a while, amused by the possibility of toppling over into the mud. Sun on my face, I felt somewhere between a hobbit, a garden gnome, and me. *snap* My eyes fluttered open, realising they snapped a photo.

Hello, it’s been a minute (ha, two months) since I was last active in this space. I found myself in that overwhelmed-what-the-hell-is-going-on-and-what-am-I-doing space (you know the one), and needed to take a step back. It’s been necessary. And very good for me. And I’m not saying I’m *back* but I am saying that this is the first time in two months that I’ve been able to write. And that alone makes me feel more like *me* than I have in a while.

Happy Monday; I hope you’ve been hanging in there 💛 taken in Amsterdam, Netherlands by @nicoleromer

Ciao for now, folks! Signing off until at least the new year. Wishing you all happy holidays and a beautiful new year.

And know that however you’re feeling at this time of year, those feelings are so valid. The holidays can be tough for people for many reasons, and this year in particular, they may have us feeling some kind of way.

If you feel any of those things, I see you. I’ve had my own ups and downs lately, and you know what? Sometimes my days feel hella hard. And sometimes they’re easier. It is okay for us to talk about it and to say so.

Today I’m lucky enough to be settling in for a cozy few days with food and a few of my loved ones. I’m officially on holiday from work, and look forward to letting myself rest. Whatever shape this end of year takes for you, I hope you are able to find some rest, too.

And above all, be kind to yourself. We all need it.

Sending you my love, and I’ll be back in January ❤️ taken in Amsterdam, Netherlands by @nicoleromer
