FASHION PICKUP. Been workshopping that name for a long time and never came up with anything better. And so it is 🤷🏼‍♀️

Fashion Pickup began as a challenge to myself: to close the gap between idea and execution, and to lean into spontaneity freeing myself from the weight of perfectionism and rediscover the beauty of simplicity, play and connection. In a single day, over 20 people were photographed across 11 hours moving through 10 inner-city suburbs of Melbourne, each encounter lasting just minutes in the backseat of a vintage 1974 Mercedes. The project celebrates personal style and individuality, while revealing Melbourne style as it is now. It is personal, expressive and immediate, captured in fleeting moments with each passenger.

The work draws on the spirit of 1980s taxi drivers in New York who photographed their passengers inside a moving car, turning the tight space of the cab into a photo studio. The structure of the concept was equal parts performance, experiment, and fashion shoot. With only a few minutes to meet, talk and photograph the subjects, the process itself dictated the aesthetic — dynamic, playful and personal. The consistent setting of the car created a frame in which self-expression takes centre stage, while the improvised interaction resists conventional fashion photoshoots.

This series is a reminder to me that the process and interpersonal connections formed are just as important as the outcome. It exists as a record of style in Melbourne, while reaffirming my own need to act upon ideas when the magic of the creative moment is at its fullest. This project has shifted how I think about my practice, moving toward creating with connection and experimentation front of mind, and letting go of the hesitation that leads to inaction and opportunities missed.

An ode to reducing the creative shelf-life so God doesn’t give your ideas to Prince (IYKYK)

I took the studio into the car after asking what would make shooting easier. The answer was keeping a consistent background and travelling to my subjects instead of asking them to come to me. So I photographed 25 people in the back of a 1974 Mercedes. While it was effortless, it did require a mammoth spreadsheet (timed to the minute) that was updated live on the road. It was an exercise in keeping things simple and anti-perfection. The editing process showed me I’m still working on those two things but hey at least it was fun.

All of this was made possible thanks to @_l.u.c.y_p_ a triple threat, provider of the car, chauffeur service and BTS content.
