China Field Notes 01: Art really takes you to unexpected places. China welcomed me with so much warmth, respect, and appreciation. To come from the Philippines and feel genuinely valued here through my art has been a surreal and humbling experience.

I’m also deeply grateful to have crossed paths and shared space with some of China’s most respected artists. To simply be here, exchange stories, see their work up close, and be welcomed as a fellow artist is something I’ll never take for granted.

I came here simply to share what I do, but I’m leaving Hebei feeling incredibly grateful. Sometimes, your work finds meaning in places you never expected. 🇵🇭🇨🇳

China Field Notes 02: Still feels surreal to have been part of Meeting of Styles Chongqing. Sharing a wall with Chinese artist @game_powerfish was something special. Two artists from different places, speaking different languages, but somehow understanding each other once we started painting. There were moments when words weren’t necessary. A sketch, a gesture, a color, or a line was enough.

For our piece, we paid tribute to Sun Wukong, The Monkey King. I’ve always found him fascinating because he is more than a powerful mythical figure. His story is one of a restless spirit: mischievous, rebellious, constantly testing boundaries, challenging Heaven itself, and eventually finding a greater purpose through the long journey to the West. There is something timeless about that character, the refusal to be contained, the curiosity to keep moving forward, and the transformation that happens along the journey. Bringing a figure so deeply rooted in Chinese culture onto a wall in Chongqing, interpreted through Power Fish’s visual language and my own, made this collaboration feel even more meaningful.

More than the wall itself, I’ll remember the people. Thank you to @meetingofstyles_china , the organizers, the artists, and the people of Chongqing for making me feel welcome. Traveling this far to paint and finding yourself surrounded by people from different countries, cultures, and languages reminded me why I love doing this. Art has a way of introducing us before we even know how to speak to each other.

I came to Chongqing to paint, but I’m leaving with new friendships, new perspectives, and a deeper appreciation for the culture that welcomed us. I feel very fortunate to have been given a small place in this experience.
