Last week, First Nations and POC performing artists from communities across Australia came together to explore acting, storytelling, movement, music and more at NIDA as part of our ‘Pathways’ program. We spoke to them about their experience, what challenged them and what they’ll take home after this week. Hear them reflect on what it meant to them to build confidence and skill in a room where they felt a sense of belonging.

@carnegiemellon students Nyree Binns and Sofia Garcia traded one world-class acting school for another, spending a semester immersed in life at NIDA alongside our second-year Bachelor of Fine Arts, Acting class. Scandal. Romance. Drama. Just another day in NIDA’s Master of Fine Arts, Dramatic Writing course. Live Action Role-Play (LARP) has exploded in popularity as a way for people to come together and tell a shared story that is both contained and completely chaotic. In this class, students put away their scripts and immersed themselves in a Regency-era LARP, exploring storytelling by becoming Austen themed characters, then playing out their conflicts.

Designer Fiona Donovan (Design, 1992) has worked across outstanding Australian productions including, 'The Twelve', 'Population: 11' and recently 'The Correspondent' starring fellow alum Richard Roxburgh (Acting, 1986). Now the president of the Australian Production Design Guild (@apdguild), we caught up with Fiona to talk about her foundational training here at NIDA, what continues to inspire her work and the stories that she feels most passionate about telling as a designer.

Congratulations to our alumni nominated for Emmy Awards! For the 5th year in a row, Julio Himede (Design, 1999) has been nominated in the category Outstanding Production Design For A Variety Special, this year for both, 'The Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show Starring Bad Bunny' as well as for '68th Annual Grammy Awards'. Tony Award winning Actress Sarah Snook (Acting, 2008) has also been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie for 'All Her Fault', which has also been nominated for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. The ceremony will be available to stream on Binge and Foxtel on 15 September. by @nidacommunity
