Newbery Medal-winning author Meg Medina is one of the incredible voices coming this season on The Storyteller’s Shelf Podcast.

@megmedinabooks

In this clip, she shares the kind of wisdom that reminds us why children’s books matter and why stories can stay with young readers long after the last page.

This season, we’re bringing conversations with authors, editors, publishers, illustrators, librarians, and kidlit professionals as we continue celebrating children’s literature and demystifying the publishing world.

And while we continue this season, we’d love to invite authors, illustrators, and publishing creatives to join us for the Marketing Mastery Summit, a live online event focused on book marketing, author platform, publicity, social media, and reader connection.

My main antagonist, Hurderer the Murderer, and his sidekick, Mepto the Klepto. What percent exhausted do you have to be as an author to name your character Hannibal the Cannibal? 100% exhausted or 100% cheeky lolz? (PS Nope, we aren’t talking about Elias Thorne today!) by @nieveesol

We’ve been holding onto a secret, and we’re excited to finally share it.

Today, we’re launching something special for authors.

At our Marketing Mastery Summit, we officially introduced Storyrise, a writing app built to help writers plan, draft, revise, and finish their stories.
As writers ourselves, we know how easy it is to get lost in scattered notes, unfinished drafts, and the challenges of staying motivated.

We created Storyrise because we wanted a better way to organize ideas, build stories, and maintain momentum from the first spark of inspiration to a finished manuscript.

With Storyrise, writers can join live writing sprints, draft in the Writer’s Room, organize characters and story threads in Atlas, invite feedback from editors and beta readers, and export manuscript-ready PDF, EPUB, and DOCX files.

This has been a labor of love, and we’re incredibly grateful to finally put it into the hands of the writing community.

Try Storyrise free for 14 days:

In this episode of WHY WE READ, we sit down with Amirah Elayan to talk honestly about modern reading culture, literacy habits in 2026, and why so many young people feel intimidated by books instead of welcomed by them.

We talk:
📖 Reading as identity
📖 The role of professors and writers as readers first
📖 Book clubs as spaces of belonging
📖 Writing, reading habits, and lifelong literacy

Featuring MFA graduate, poet, publishing professional, adjunct professor, and writer Amirah Elayan.
