Fall is my favorite time of year! The sun casts a golden light on everything, the air crisp and everyone showing their harvests. So much to be thankful for.
Made a spicy sausage & kale soup for my son and his girlfriend as they have colds. Went to the Richland @tricitiesfoodcoopofficial and got sausage from @krranches and heavy cream from @creamlinefarms also got some kale, eggs and a hand made pot from @ggsplantshop (it was only $10!!!!! Whaaaaat?!?)
So thankful for all the local people that make these locally sourced items available. Any chance to not support “the man” I take!

Also saved another critter from the pool and watched her dry off. You will never be bored if you slow down and look at all the other lives being lived around you.

Today I picked 22 lbs of Concord grapes and made 18 pints of freezer jam.
Each year these 🍇 grow on the property and I never know what to do!
I don’t know how to can yet but didn’t want them to go to waste so I looked up freezer jam recipes and found one where I only used the grapes, lemon juice and gelatin. The kitchen was a disaster but it was so much fun!!!
Then I made a tomato and cheese sandwich with my Purple Cherokee mators from the garden for dinner. Today was a good day!
This is how I want to spend my days but alas we created a society where we must trade 5 days away from home so we can go to the store and buy jam from the store. We’ve been had.

Day 4 of 5 hiking the first 80 something miles of Section H on the Pacific Crest Trail.

Today I was really worried my body wouldn’t hold up as Day 3 was physically very difficult for me but my body surprised me and I felt amazing!

This stretch of section H features part of The Big Lava Bed from only 8200 years ago as well as lots of lakes. I’ll definitely be bringing my family back to this area to camp by those lakes. It’s just soooo beautiful!!!

Day 3 of 5 of my section of PCT section H hike. I didn’t have enough time off work to do all of section H so I’m hiking from Bridge of Gods trail entrance to Trout Lake shuttle area just off forest service road 23.

Today I REALLY struggled physically. Day 1 hiked 15.5 miles, Day 2 hiked 21 miles and today I made it 11 miles (mostly climbing).

This is the longest I’ve backpacked since I was in my 20’s and yes I did prep for about a year leading up to this but I’ve not done 5 days in a row so I knew it would be a challenge.

I realized on Day 3 that I wasn’t eating enough calories and most likely depleted myself on Day 2.

I’ve now learned to bring more easy meals like protein shakes for dinner. At night I’m just too tired to really want to cook and chew.

Day 2 of section of section H of the PCT hike. Made it from a tent site just before 3 Corner Rock trail all the way to Panther Creek. I purified myself in the waters of lake Minnetonka…Panther Creek (shout out to Prince’s 1984 semi-autobiographical musical drama Purple Rain)
For dinner I had a disgusting meal of pre packaged freeze dried beans and rice with enough garlic to scare all manner of life away so no I am not afraid to sleep in the forest alone.

Day 1 of 87 miles on section H of the PCT. Didn’t start as early as I had planned and paid for it later with the heat! Luckily I packed water and ran into water on the trail if I needed more. Found a tent site next to some other hikers before the 3 Corner Rocks trail. All in all it was a beautiful day full of “wtf” and “wow that’s beautiful” as it always is on the trail. 🌄

My son and his girlfriend dropped me off at the trailhead for section H of the PCT. I only have 4 days so I’ll be headed to Williams Mine Trailhead about 83 miles in. Would’ve loved to make it to White Pass to complete this entire section but I gots bills to pay dammit and have to rejoin society.

Absolutely LOVE @bonnevilleresort and after hours of soaking in the natural spring water filled with soothing minerals I am ready for the adventure ahead!

Found this male 10 Striped June bug floating in my pool while I was out weeding (hence the dirty, dirty fingernails)

Surprised he was alive so rinsed him with clean water and he’s ready for date night tonight!
June bugs are clumsy fliers with poor eyesight but very attracted to light. That’s why you may find them on your porch after a crash landing with your house.
They’re completely harmless to humans and even edible!
Their entire life cycle is about 3 years with most of thier life lived underground eating plant roots and decaying plant matter. As adults they can live up to a year depending on the species but these guys don’t live so long with our shorter summer.
If you see a 10 striped June bug don’t be afraid of him or her, they live a short life above ground.

This weekend Axe and I did the 5 Lakes Loop trail starting at Dog Lake Campground.
You can also start this loop at the White Pass trailhead if you wanted (it’s just across the street (highway 12) from where I hiked last weekend)

Lots of streams, creeks, rivers and ponds on this trail coupled with beautiful meadows. Lots of shade too (compared to last weekends Shoe Lake hike where the trail was more exposed) so this trail is dog-friendly.

Bring skeeter spray! I used @sawyerproducts to treat all my clothing and gear before I left and it worked better than any other spray I’ve used. A fellow hiker saw me struggling with mosquitoes last weekend and told me about it and I’m so glad he did! This is the first time I’ve ever had a bug spray actually WORK!
