Since last year, Nightfund has been working away in the background. Dreaming, exploring, testing, looking forward.

Back in May, much of this work culminated in supporting @luxe____________ for her seminal live show concept “REVERIE” at the @alghasplantroom in Hackney Wick. Nightfund stepped in to find a suitable brand partner, bringing in @aceandfreak who provided essential backing for the show to maximise its cultural impact.

The night centred on LUXE’s live performance alongside 6 professional instrumentalists and chamber choir, showcasing an accomplished fusion of classical & electronic textures. Supporting acts @damsel.elysium and @xexarecords gave performances in the same spirit of avant-garde, a feeling which the night leaned into heavily.

Also featuring light & art installation by @_digi_pad / @sophie.m.e.i / @___badweather and sound by @amoenus_london

The May showcase was only the beginning for LUXE, as she’s since taken her live show on tour with Jon Hopkins and to Draaimolen Festival. Much more to come, no doubt, as she steadily builds a reputation as a forward-thinking and impactful recording artist. by @nightfund_

On 18th May 2023, Nightfund unveiled its first project in collaboration with London-based promoters Goodness. The goal was to demonstrate a more equitable system for distributing grant funding - giving those who care about grassroots music culture a say in which players and projects receive support and funding, in accordance with what has the most social and cultural impact. The first project was chosen by the Nightfund committee with the idea to offer something unique, memorable and affordable to London clubbers. It was held at the Brunel Museum in Rotherhithe, the site for the world’s first tunnel built under a navigable river (completed in 1843), featuring post-rock band Seefeel (Too Pure, Warp, Rephlex) and Bristol-based modular synth artist, Surgeons Girl (Livity Sound). They performed inside Brunel’s tunnel shaft, itself a Grade II listed building, to the backdrop of floor-to-ceiling visuals from Seefeel’s own AV crew. It was Seefeel’s first headline show in London for over a decade which generated a fair bit of excitement with ‘90s heads, many of whom were swelling the crowd’s ranks.

Our launch event on Thursday was just a small insight into how nightlife could evolve in years to come…

Beginning with a set of proposals submitted by @goodness_uk , the concept emerged from the resulting discussion within the Nightfund community about how they delivered something London needed more of. There was a strong attraction to the idea of placing live, experimental artists in unusual spaces like the @brunel_museum and this concept clearly made good use of the funding. The final product powerfully reflected this vision - seeing the tunnel shaft in full flow felt like vindication for all involved.

Funding was essential to deliver an event of this nature at a relatively affordable price. Given how inaccessible most club nights and music events are, let alone those equivalent to last Thursday’s show, Nightfund aims to prioritise affordability over exclusivity. Without accessible events, the diverse social makeup of grassroots music and the value this creates for the whole music industry are under threat.

It was also a landmark event for @goodness_uk , building on their live programme of the last 8 months and adding significantly to their capacity as a live promoter. It shouldn’t hurt their future booking power to have a show like this under their belt. With their next show at FOLD creating a lot of buzz and involving some exceptional live talent, the brand has new-found momentum and it’ll be exciting to witness their progression from here on out.

Thank you to the talented performers @seefeel.signals and @sinead_surgeonsgirl , very special panel guests @karolina_magm2 @srf_sow @shainshapiro @louisehenry__ , Nightfund committee members, our hosts @brunel_museum and of course project collaborators @___badweather and @goodness_uk .

More photos and videos, as well as an evaluation of the event’s long-term impact, coming soon. by @nightfund_

Concept Venue: Brunel Museum

The world's first underwater tunnel built in 1843, once used by the public to walk under the Thames and now part of the Overground network. The buildings and infrastructure left behind from the construction process are now a renovated performance and events space which will host @seefeel.signals and @sinead_surgeonsgirl on the 18th.

The history of the site ties in well with the ambitions of Nightfund. The tunnel was a hub for Victorian nightlife, infamously dubbed the 'Hades Hotel' by its detractors, but prevailing in what it offered to those who didn't fit in with polite society. It had a vision for a more mobile, dynamic and metropolitan London and showed what was possible with committed investment - becoming an essential thoroughfare for working people in the East End and laying the foundations for much further innovation and industrial progress.

It's a pleasure to take over a venue with such provenance, as the first step in building space for more forward-thinking event projects.

Reminder that our final batch of tickets are dropping on 3rd May. Further updates via @goodness_uk taken in Brunel Museum by @nightfund_

Launch event partner: @goodness_uk

A party crew formed in different corners of the UK and converging in London over recent years who’ve shown as well as anyone how commitment to a 'programming-first' approach pays off over time. They’ve made it their mission to showcase left-field club sounds over a wide spectrum of genres and forms, the musical experience they create and how that music evolves through their parties becoming a key metric for their success as a promoter.

In the early stages of discussing a partnership it was clear they had a vision for the future which centred sustainability, diversity and long-termism - all essential ingredients to institute ‘bouncing forward’ resilience in the night time economy and well-aligned with Nightfund’s remit as an incubator for new ideas that evolve club culture. In the current climate, where a lack of foresight and cynical opportunism often prevail, it’s a welcome attitude.

See above slides for a deeper insight - the ‘Good’ stuff in action.

Important info:
We will be releasing a final batch of tickets on May 3rd, see @goodness_uk page for more details by @nightfund_
