The bird of Kū, and a symbol for Honolulu’s urban sprawl. The Manu o Kū hunts out to sea in the morning (a time of day traditionally dedicated to Kū), and are known to fly up to 120 miles from land before returning back to their roost. In ancient times, voyagers all over Polynesia saw the Manu o Kū as a sign that land was near. Today, you’ll see them primarily in the busiest parts of Honolulu. Scientists aren’t sure why they’ve taken to downtown buildings and trees to lay their eggs. As of 2007, the Manu o Kū was named the official bird of Honolulu. Update on our fundraiser collection for the Kona low storms- we just recieved the gloves and the remainder of the orders are shipping now. Keep an eye on your emails for tracking numbers and local pickup notifications. Mahalo for your patience, and for supporting this effort in general. Your purchases helped us donate over $5,000 to various organizers and directly to families across the pae ʻāina (receipts in story highlight). There’s a handful of leftover gloves and stickers left. Few motifs symbolize Hawaii’s diverse ethnic makeup like Palaka; a fabric developed for plantation workers as a sturdy but lightweight cotton. Made to endure the elements and wash easy.
