Hi,

For those who don't know me, I'm Nightmist, a 19-year-old, chronically ill writer who has a lot of creativity and wonder to share, so here I am.
I write (poetic) fantasy stories and songs and I am currently working on my first novel.
These little short stories are part of a challenge called Flashtober, to write and share every day based on a list of prompts. They are all inspired by my own world, my characters, my experiences and my book.

This is day 18 of flashtober. The prompt was 'kiss' (promptlist by @ehillauthor )

I have to say, I didn't think this prompt would be so difficult. In the context of the bigger story, I couldn't think of anything logical, but I managed to think of something. I also had a lot of trouble finding the right photo to accompany it, so I'm not entirely happy with it still, but it's good enough.
The story itself is relatively simple.

I hope you enjoyed it! Have a lovely day, thank you for reading and stay around for more stories💕

Kiss

Sunlight kissed the treetops, the flowers, the valleys, as the sun traded places with the stars. Sapphire laid in the centre of her flowers, River sitting next to her on a blanket. He looks at her in amazement and bewilderment, as he often does when she dirties her dresses without a second thought.

Sapphire’s hand weaved through the beautiful assortment of flowers surrounding them, but her eyes watched the sun. The sky had shifted from dark to rainbow, River had only joined her when it was properly light out, but Sapphire had been there for the stars.

To watch the light kiss the darkness and chase the night away.

This is day 17 of flashtober. The prompt was 'vow' (promptlist by @ehillauthor )

My first thought was marriage vows, but I couldn't think of a story with that. I started writing with the idea of the vow my characters make at the start of the book, that they will find their friend, Ash. As I started writing, it changed into a vow they make as children and a vow from the stars, to protect them.

I really hope you enjoyed this short story and follow along for more of these💕
Have a lovely day

Vow

In the dead of night, three children chase the fireflies. The stars watch them, laughing, running, dancing, falling and getting up again with no care in the world.

Soon, one will fear the night and its darkness.
Soon, one will dance on her own.
Soon, two will chase the third into the night, like they now chase the fireflies.

The children lay down in the grass, the world foggy and damp with dew. They gaze up at the stars, whispering their wishes and their vows into the night. The stars will protect them.

There, in the night, three children vow to love and protect each other,
This night, the stars whisper back

Hi,

For those who don't know me, I'm Nightmist, a 19-year-old, chronically ill writer who has a lot of creativity and wonder to share, so here I am.

This is day 15 of flashtober. The prompt was 'teacher' (promptlist by @ehillauthor )

I really loved this prompt and I am very excited for the other prompts this week, because I have so many ideas. I originally had another idea, but I do like the way this turned out. River is the main character of my first book and he has lost a lot. His teacher and mentor took him in when his parents died, which is what I wrote about. I have seen grief around me, but I myself have never really experienced it in the form of a loved one dying, apart from one grandparent, but I was only 4. I do carry other forms of grief I think, for friends who I lost to time or who moved away, for the abilities I lost a few years ago. I don't think grief has to be huge, nor only caused by death. I just hope I write it right.

I really hope you enjoyed this short story and follow along for more of these💕
Have a lovely day

Teacher

Photos line the walls of the hall of goodbyes. Sometimes forever, sometimes just a little while, the goodbyes last. The memories, captured in frames hanged upon those walls, picture a past River traces with his hand, his path decided by his heart.

He follows the steps he left long ago, as he walked this hall in a goodbye forever. Footsteps of a child who lost his parents. Footsteps accompanied by the man whose picture he is leaving behind today.
The Hero, his teacher, who took him in like he was his own. A goodbye, for now.

He stops by the reason for his leaving, and leaves the promise to find them again.

Hi,

For those who don't know me, I'm Nightmist, a 19-year-old, chronically ill writer who has a lot of creativity and wonder to share, so here I am.

This is day 14 of flashtober. The prompt was 'gift' (promptlist by @ehillauthor )

My inspiration came from multiple things. First, I thought of the magic in my book, which led to the gift of talent. But ultimately, this holds the pain of optimism and hope within my illness. You often hear people tell you to look on the bright side of everything, which I am very good at most days. But it doesn't take away from the reality of the pain, the exhaustion. Getting this sick was a gift in the way of discovering my safety in my writing and my music, but just because it brought me good things, doesn't make being chronically ill a gift.

I hope you enjoyed and have a lovely day
And hopefully I'll see you tomorrow

Gift

It was a gift. That’s what they told him. It was a gift given to you, a present you’re supposed to love, a current meant to sweep you off your feet and away on its wave.
It was a gift.

But it didn’t feel like a gift. The past he’d been forced to endure, the people he lost for this present. It could never feel like a gift, because this present stole his future.

It was a gift, they told him, over and over, promised him he just had to believe. So he believed, he hoped, he longed.

It wasn’t a gift. It was a curse and he had no choice but to carry it.

Hi,

For those who don't know me, I'm Nightmist, a 19-year-old, chronically ill writer who has a lot of creativity and wonder to share, so here I am.

This is day 13 of flashtober. The prompt was 'launch' (promptlist by @ehillauthor )

This prompt just immediately made me think of baby birds flying for the first time. It makes me think of flying, which brought me to Solar. I've written a poem about Icarus before, where I compare Falling and flying, which also lend me some inspiration for this.
"What if I fall? Oh, but what if you fly?"

I hope you enjoyed and perhaps even got inspired to create something yourself. Have a lovely day and I hope to see you again tomorrow💕

Launch

Solar smiles widely at the young birds hesitating on the edge of her balcony railing. Their mother flew away moments ago and now they’re supposed to follow. One brave little bird goes first, falling quite far before spreading her tiny wings and soaring, chirping happily. The others follow, jumping and spreading their wings for the first time, until only one is left.

He sits on Solar’s hand and looks back at her.
“You can do it,” She tells the little bird, before launching him in the air. The little bird falls further, further, and Solar dives after him, catching him in her hands.
She spreads her wings for the first time and together,

They fly

Hi,

For those who don't know me, I'm Nightmist, a 19-year-old, chronically ill writer who has a lot of creativity and wonder to share, so here I am.

This is day 12 of flashtober. The prompt was 'fireworks' (promptlist by @ehillauthor )

I have to say, when I started writing this one, I truly didn't think it would turn dark. It was supposed to be nice and cosy and just some characters watching the beautiful fireworks together, but apparently story had other ideas. I suppose it is fitting. I sure love my creepy stories and my drama.
Other than that, as I read this back, I'm realising it feels a lot like some days of my life, where I wanted fireworks, it was supposed to be fun, but instead, it's a day of pain.
This story is about suffering, about war, about everyone in this world that should be enjoying life, but instead, are stuck in war and pain and endless fighting.
Colours that should have been fireworks.

I hope you enjoyed and have a lovely day
And I hope you'll follow along💕

Fireworks

Colours explode into the night. It’s raining red and gold and blue and purple, mixed with the storm that’s hosing down. The sound of the fireworks should’ve been deafening, but it’s inaudible over the clashing of swords and the thundering clouds.

One lone figure stands at the edge of it all, underneath a stunningly old tree. They watch people fall and run and stumble, watch red blood smear on the ground before it’s washed away by rain. Watch the gold of weapons flash in movement against the purple and blue of clothes and flowers and people.
being trampled, being killed.

Colours exploding into the night
that should have been fireworks.

Hi,

For those who don't know me, I'm Nightmist, a 19-year-old, chronically ill writer who has a lot of creativity and wonder to share, so here I am.

This is day 11 of flashtober. The prompt was 'brother' (promptlist by @ehillauthor )

As always, this was inspired by my book and its characters. But it's also a little about grief and guilt and friendship. I'm curious if you read it as the letter being forgotten or the brother, Tide, leaving in a hurry to go help his sister

I hope you enjoyed and have a lovely day💕

Brother

“Dear brother,

I hope this letter finds you well. I know this must be wildly unexpected, after all, you haven’t heard from me in years. I apologize for disappearing. I am sorry I left you behind and I am sorry for expecting you to take care of our little brother when you were only eleven years old yourself.

I write you now, not to apologize, but because I need your help. It is inappropriate, I realize, to bother you like this, but you see, you might be my only hope.

So I ask you to meet me, I trust you know where to go.”

On the desk, in the empty study, lies the letter left behind.

Hi,

For those who don't know me, I'm Nightmist, a 19-year-old, chronically ill writer who has a lot of creativity and wonder to share, so here I am.

This is day 10 of flashtober. The prompt was 'coffee' (promptlist by @ehillauthor )

I was inspired by a scene from my book where River misses Ash, so this became about grief and missing someone and your thoughts keeping you awake

I hope you enjoyed and have a lovely day!

Coffee

The coffee has gone cold. It’s dark in the room, where River sits staring at the sketchbook on his lap. He couldn’t sleep, but he isn’t really drawing either. He has lost all track of time, lost in thoughts he thought he’d chased away a long time ago.

Like a dream, his memories chase the long, silvery white hair through the forest, a trail of laughter he follows like his life depends on it. Freckles like stars and eyes like moonlight lighting his path as he chases his heart.

Outside his window, the stars and moon watch him now, lost in those pages, white, where strands of silver dance away.
And the coffee has gone cold.

Hi,

For those who don't know me, I'm Nightmist, a 19-year-old, chronically ill writer who has a lot of creativity and wonder to share, so here I am.

This is day 9 of flashtober. The prompt was 'waffle' (promptlist by @ehillauthor )

This story was inspired by this amazing cafe in my book, the Vibrant Falyske. It's incredible safe and cosy and I just love it. It felt like the perfect prompt to add a cosy story like this to the collection.

I hope you enjoyed and have a lovely day
And see you tomorrow💕

Waffle

Valeska’s cafe, the Vibrant Falyske, is warm and cosy as always. Sapphire happily sips her spiced hot chocolate, while River enjoys his still warm waffle with caramel and fruit. The comfortable, soft chairs and matching soft blankets complete the relaxing experience.

Slowly, the world darkens outside, making the cafe feel even more alive with joyful lights. Tide takes his place on the podium, the air filling with the tunes of his original music. Sapphire and River dance and sing along to Tide’s incredible songs, knowing every word.

A second waffle is left forgotten on their table, along with all their problems as music mixes with their laughter in this cafe made of joy.

Hi,

For those who don't know me, I'm Nightmist, a 19-year-old, chronically ill writer who has a lot of creativity and wonder to share, so here I am.

This is day 8 of flashtober. The prompt was 'mirror' (promptlist by @ehillauthor )

I could think of a lot of things for this prompt, it could fit most of my characters very well, but I decided to use Solar for this one. She's a shapeshifter and a sort of princess who longs to be free of her duties and just fly over the world.

I hope you enjoyed, have a lovely day
And I'll be back tomorrow

Mirror

Somedays, Solar’s convinced the mirror hates her. It disapproves all of her looks and makes her crawl out of her skin.
Some days, even shifting into something else, to escape her world of endless ballgowns and looking pretty, doesn’t stop the mirror’s sneering. It hates her chaos, hates her joy.

Some days, the mirror smiles back at her with a mischievous, knowing grin. Those days, she feels most like herself, in dirtied clothes, and painted skin, as she escapes into the wild.

All days, the mirror has opinions Solar hates to care about.

All days, she longs for freedom
of that mirror, so profound

Hi,

For those who don't know me, I'm Nightmist, a 19-year-old, chronically ill writer who has a lot of creativity and wonder to share, so here I am.

This is day 7 of flashtober. The prompt was fight (promptlist by @ehillauthor )

My inspiration was my main character, River. While he is supposed to fight a lot, he has a lot of fear and panic about nearly everything.
It is also inspired by my own fighting. I'm happy with what I'm still able to do, but so many days, it's a fight to do anything. Exhaustion forcing me to stay seated, it can feel like being paused in life while everyone else continues. It can feel like falling.

As always, I hope you enjoyed it, have a lovely day
And hopefully see you tomorrow

Fight

It’s loud, it’s so painfully loud. River’s heart beats out his chest as he runs through the crowd. He has to keep running, he has to, he has to. But it’s so, so loud and chaotic and his head is spinning. Fear grips at his chest, stealing the air from his lungs.

He falls.

River’s hand clenches at the fabric of his shirt, pushes as if trying to make his heart stay in his chest, as if trying to silence it. The world turns quiet, not because the noise stops, but because he can’t hear it anymore.

He has to fight, has to keep going, he has to keep running.

But he’s too busy fighting to survive.
