⭐️⭐️⭐️ BUDDY (2026)

Buddy had a lot of potential and, in some ways, accomplished what Mr. Crocket couldn't. The concept was strong enough to carry a genuinely unsettling movie, but it eventually fell back on predictable horror tropes.

My biggest issue was the gore. There’s a point where gore enhances horror, and there’s a point where it replaces it. Buddy crossed that line several times. Some scenes were so excessive that the violence stopped feeling artistic or disturbing and became spectacle. A little more restraint could have made the movie far more cerebral and unsettling.

The alternate plot involving Miloni added another layer, but unfortunately, I found that side of the story even less interesting than the main premise.
Still, there’s enough here that I can’t dismiss it.

Buddy has ideas, atmosphere, and moments where you can see the much better horror movie hiding underneath. It just needed to trust those ideas instead of constantly reaching for shock.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Who Killed Malcolm X? (2019)

This series follows a regular man who refuses to accept the official story and spends decades digging into Malcolm X’s assassination. What starts as personal obsession turns into real investigative journalism, uncovering buried evidence, government failures, and people who were wrongly blamed.

It’s not flashy. It’s patient. The power is in watching how truth only moves when someone is stubborn enough to keep pushing.
This is one of those documentaries that shows how history isn’t fixed. It’s negotiated by whoever is willing to do the work.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Unabomber: In His Own Words (2022)

With Netflix releasing another dramatized version of the Unabomber story, I found myself thinking about Unabomber: In His Own Words. And honestly, I would recommend this first.
The real story is darker, stranger, and more disturbing than anything a fictional adaptation needs to manufacture.

This documentary has something those films can never recreate: Kaczynski himself. His recorded words, his writings, the people who knew him, the investigators who spent years trying to understand him, and the brother and sister-in-law who ultimately recognized where the evidence was pointing. The FBI manhunt lasted nearly two decades and eventually involved more than 150 investigators.

What makes it fascinating is not admiration. It is watching extraordinary intelligence become completely detached from empathy. A gifted mathematician living almost entirely off-grid, constructing increasingly sophisticated bombs while one of the largest manhunts in American history struggled to identify him.

He is less interesting as some mythical criminal mastermind than as a terrifying example of what intelligence can become when it is devoted to something monstrous.

That is why In His Own Words works so well. It does not need to turn him into a movie character. The reality is disturbing enough.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Sixth Sense (1999)

Looking back in 2026, The Sixth Sense is the movie that gave M. Night Shyamalan forgiveness for almost everything that came afterward.

Some of his later movies had interesting ideas, but too often they became so obsessed with delivering a twist that the story suffered for it. Not everything needs a reveal. Sometimes atmosphere, characters, and dread are enough.
And that’s what makes The Sixth Sense feel almost like it came from a completely different filmmaker.

The pacing is patient. The lighting is gloomy without being obnoxious. The movie understands slow-burn horror in a way I wish more modern horror films did. It doesn’t constantly throw things at you. It creates discomfort and lets you sit in it.

More importantly, the film puts you in Cole’s shoes. A shy, isolated boy carrying a horrific secret that has turned everyday life into a nightmare.

You don’t just understand that he’s frightened, you feel how exhausting it must be to live with that fear every day.

Haley Joel Osment gives one of the best performances I’ve seen on screen, child or adult.

Shyamalan may be a one-trick pony in my eyes, but this movie proves that when the trick works, it can be incredible.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 Under the Skin (2013)

I did not appreciate Under the Skin the first time I saw it.

Years later, I think it is one of the most original films I have ever watched, right up there with Pi in terms of feeling like something that exists completely on its own wavelength.

What makes it work is the subtlety. It does not constantly explain itself. It does not beg for your attention with exposition, loud reveals, or obvious emotional cues. It trusts atmosphere, silence, behavior, and imagery. That kind of restraint feels increasingly rare.

Yes, Scarlett Johansson gives the gooners some eye candy, but that is almost beside the point. The real power of the film is how disturbingly natural everything feels.

Large parts of it feel like you are watching something that actually happened and somehow should not exist on camera.

That is what makes it unsettling.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Woman of the Hour (2024)

I revisited Woman of the Hour and I honestly think this is an underrated horror film.

What works for me is how real everything feels.

Daniel Zovatto, who I remembered from It Follows, never feels like some exaggerated movie monster. The scene where he follows Cheryl at night is the perfect example. It feels less like a horror scene and more like something somebody accidentally caught on camera.

The lighting, cinematography, pacing, and silence are just right. Nothing is screaming at you to be scared. You just know something is wrong.

The movie understands something simple that a lot of serial killer films don't. A serial killer is scarier when the movie stops treating him like one.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Resident Evil (2026)

The new Resident Evil is entertaining. The CGI looks good, some of the creatures are genuinely creepy, the comedy lands more often than it misses, and I actually liked the decision to center the story around an ordinary medical delivery guy instead of immediately handing us another larger-than-life action hero.

But I kept having one problem while watching it.

I’ve seen this movie before.

Not literally, but that familiar Resident Evil feeling eventually starts creeping in. Zombies. Mutations. Dark corridors. Secret experiments. Increasingly grotesque monsters. Somebody discovering that the situation is much bigger than they originally thought.

At some point, deja vu takes over.

That does not automatically make it a bad movie. In fact, it might be exactly why the movie works as well as it does. Resident Evil is an incredibly durable franchise. The basic ingredients are already effective. Give an audience a creepy location, some good creature designs, limited resources, body horror, an outbreak, and the possibility that something much worse is hiding around the next corner, and you already have a strong foundation.

Which brings me to Zach Cregger.

I liked Barbarian quite a bit the first time I saw it. On a rewatch, though, some of the cracks became much easier to see. I had a similar reaction to Weapons. It wasn't bad at all, but I thought the hype surrounding it was stronger than the movie itself.

And I think there is a pattern forming.

Cregger is clearly talented at constructing moments. He understands tension, uncomfortable comedy, grotesque imagery, and how to keep an audience wondering what is coming next. But with Resident Evil, I found myself wondering how much of what I was enjoying came from him and how much came from a franchise that already knows exactly how to push those buttons.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

Stanley Kubrick’s final film remains deeply underrated. His death shortly after completing it helped fuel countless conspiracy theories, including claims that the movie was somehow autobiographical. None of that can be proven (right now), but the film itself is unsettling enough without the speculation.

Long before Epstein made secret networks of wealth and influence part of mainstream conversation, Eyes Wide Shut explored a world where sex, status, secrecy, and power intersect behind closed doors. And despite its reputation, the sexual content isn’t what makes this strictly adult viewing. It’s the symbolism, psychological tension, and layers beneath nearly every scene.

Go in expecting a thriller and you may leave with questions people are still debating today.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Relay (2024)

Relay is a restrained thriller that makes secrecy feel practical instead of cinematic. Its tension comes from procedure, surveillance, coded communication, dead drops, and the constant risk of being noticed.

The movie treats information like something physical. It has to be protected, moved, hidden, and controlled.

What makes Relay effective is how grounded the world feels. The people involved are not superheroes or master spies.

They are navigating systems that already exist, using anonymity, routine, and distance to stay ahead of people with more power and resources. That makes the danger feel current.
The film is patient, sometimes deliberately so, but that restraint helps sell the realism.

It is less interested in spectacle than in showing how pressure, secrecy, and information can shape every decision.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 I'm No Longer Here (2019)

Some films don't feel like movies. They feel like everyday life.

I'm No Longer Here spends so much time letting you live alongside Ulises that when violence finally catches up to him, it feels personal instead of sensational. His decision to leave isn't presented as an adventure. It's survival.

When he arrives in New York, the hardest part isn't just finding work. It's existing in a place where he barely speaks the language, knows almost no one, and struggles to communicate. The isolation is crushing. Every interaction reminds you how alone he is. It feels less like moving to another country and more like being dropped onto another planet.

Watching it today, it's difficult not to think about immigration debates happening right now. The film isn't simply about crossing a border. It's about people trying to escape violence, poverty, or impossible circumstances while searching for a chance at a better life.

The film doesn't offer simple answers, but it reminds us that these discussions are ultimately about human beings.
