On July 19, 1962, José Meiffret set a world speed record of 204.778 km/h (127.243 mph) on a German autobahn behind a modified Mercedes-Benz 300SL.
His bicycle weighed 20kg (44 lbs) and included special features like a 130-tooth chainring, a 15-tooth rear sprocket, an inverted fork, wooden rims to prevent heat buildup, a reinforced frame, and Dunlop tires designed for high speeds. The gear ratio was 8.67:1, giving him approximately 225 gear inches.
Meiffret rode within 45cm (18 inches) of the car's extended windscreen for aerodynamics. His legs rotated at 3.1 revolutions per second. The bike’s gearing was so heavy that a motorcycle helped get him moving. At top speed, he covered 190 feet per second.
Meiffret’s impressive record remained unbroken until 1973, when Allan Abbott achieved 223 km/h (139 mph). by @nightsprinters
