My time at @black_cite_sight_site with @bads_lab during the @bienalsaopaulo was definitely transformative to say the least. I appreciated this question posed by @_odetotheother about situatedness based on situated theory citing Brazilian thinkers and activists Abdias Nascimento, Léila Gonzalez, Sueli Carneiro, and Anibal Quiano. How are we situating ourselves and body of work as politically and socially engaged artists within the built environment of Galleria do Reggae in São Paulo? It really called forward the story of my becoming as an artist that rather can integrate my urban planning experience through my work. I could have left the instrument on the floor with the mallets easily signaling that it’s meant to play but by standing the instrument up vertically the xylophone takes on a symbolism of the structure of the Galleria do Reggae. So the entire installation through the energy of Ananse the Spider takes on a trickster energy (I’m not gonna break all that down now) but what I can say is that the energy is parallel to that of the orisha Eshu in Ifa, where the Galleria along with other black infrastructures where there are few, far and in between are at a crossroads for their survival and so what does collective self determination look like for local black marketplaces in the face of gentrification? taken in Galeria Do Reggae by @nii.a.k

I wish I could extend my stay in Brazil after my first trip here. To top it all off @seujorge was on my flight back to EWR! I just wrapped up residency with @black_cite_sight_site , a Black world-building studio fellowship and art intervention at the historic Galleria do Reggae, a landmark of Black culture in São Paulo, Brazil, during the @bienalsaopaulo . In collaboration with @bads_lab @africaiseverywhere

During my studio time. I worked on my installation “Unraveling Ananse’s Gyli,” which was first displayed as a series of six assemblage chandelier pieces. The work draws inspiration from the Gyli—a wooden, polyphonic percussive instrument from the Lobi people of Ghana (similar to a balafon or wooden xylophone). I collaborated with @cedricmitchell and @jojotemmeng, with production by @sena.affadu , for an exhibition @themixgh as part of their Open Cell, entitled A Divination of Enjoyment EP Vol. 3. This was the final volume of a series of art activations I launched after the @africanunion_official Accra Reparations Conference, as a part of a global multimedia anthology I am the executive producer of, The Remedy is Solidarity. This project also supported me in becoming an @opensocietyfoundations Equality Fellow.

The past two months have been a deep learning experience. As I come out of it, I’m reflecting on how I can share my journey being urban planner and conceptual artist as this current age of the imperial attempts to advance itself- What would it look like to redesign and restore patterns freedom escape routes that allows for us to capture an ecological sense of self in community with those who desire the same in an environment where we are so consumed with being egotistical? taken in República, São Paulo by @nii.a.k

NEWARK, ARE YOU READY?! 🐅🪩

Announcing the program for A House Called Zanzibar presents WHERE DO YOU GO WHEN THE PARTY’S OVER? — a living archive celebrating 47 years of Club Zanzibar and the Jersey Sound at the 2026 Newark Arts Festival.

It’s a gathering.
A conversation across generations.
A return to the sound, stories, and spaces that shaped global club culture.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8 — We turn the lights back on!

The history of the Jersey Sound doesn’t belong to one person.

It lives in the records.
The DJs.
The dance floors.
The people who were there.
And the people carrying it forward.

Join us for the opening day of "A Journey Through House" Exhibit by @vincentbryantphotography curated by @andrecebradyart

And later...

Join us for an intergenerational conversation with Abigail Adams of Movin’ Records @miss_movin_records , historian Christopher Flowers, DJ + event curator @nadus and @ashleyyounnia + @nii.a.k of A House Called Zanzibar.

We’ll explore the evolution, preservation, and global legacy of the Jersey Sound — but this isn’t a conversation meant to be listened to quietly.

The room is part of the conversation.

Come with your memories.
Your questions.
Your stories.
Your disagreements.
Your ideas about what deserves to be remembered — and what comes next.

We’re gathering people from the past, present, and future of the sound to talk with each other.

RSVP to secure your spot!

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9 —
