Built in the 17th century by King Tirumala Nayak, this majestic palace in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, is one of the city’s must-visit landmarks. Once considered among the wonders of South India, the Thirumalai Nayakar Palace still stands as a stunning example of grandeur and royal vision.

While Madurai is world-famous for the Meenakshi Amman Temple, there’s a lot more to explore - and this palace definitely deserves a spot on your list.

Originally constructed in 1636, the palace was about four times larger than what remains today. King Tirumala Nayak wanted to build a masterpiece fit for royalty, and it’s believed that he even brought in an Italian architect to help design it. The result is an incredible mix of Dravidian, Islamic, and European architectural styles.

In the 18th century, the king’s grandson partially demolished the structure to build his own palace in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) — a project that was never completed. Later, Lord Napier, a British administrator, restored parts of the original palace, which then served as a British administrative office.

# What to See Inside

Courtyard & Main Hall:
Step through the entrance and you’ll reach the courtyard leading to the grand main hall. This was once the king’s residence, known for its intricate stucco designs and beautifully carved arches.

Dance Hall (Nataka Shala):
This was where the king enjoyed traditional dance performances accompanied by live music and torchlight.
There was once a temple and garden beside it, dedicated to Goddess Rajarajeswari - both now lost to time.

Light & Sound Show:

Every evening, the palace hosts a light and sound show
— 6:45 PM (English) and 8:00 PM (Tamil) - that runs for about 45 minutes. The show brings King Tirumala Nayak’s story to life, highlighting his devotion, victories, and passion for art.
