What you’re seeing is the surface of a compound eye — made up of hundreds to thousands of tiny individual visual units called ommatidia.

Each little “honeycomb” cell is one ommatidium, and together they form the dragonfly’s eye like a mosaic. The hexagonal pattern happens because hexagons pack together efficiently, almost like bubbles or a honeycomb.

Inside each ommatidium are:
-a tiny lens on the surface
-light-sensitive cells beneath it
-pigment cells that help isolate light from neighbouring units

Instead of one single image like our eyes produce, the dragonfly’s brain combines input from all these tiny facets into a broader, motion-sensitive picture of the world.

Before work, the Plains were silver with dew and dragonflies slept among the grasses.
We wandered slowly through the morning finding them one by one — tiny stained-glass creatures covered in droplets, slowly wiping the sleep from their eyes as the sun reached them.

Their glass wings began to glow amber and gold, and you could almost feel the bush waking around them with us.
One of those quiet little mornings that somehow feels enormous @gimmesome_tots

Celaenia excavata, Common Bird dropping spider, juvenile. Nice little find. I’ve also heard it referred to as the unconvincing bird dropping spider.
