Today, at NCCU’s Founders Day celebration, I had the incredible honor of meeting Ms. Cathrine Ferrell, who celebrates her 114th birthday tomorrow! She is noted to be the second-oldest living person in the world. What an extraordinary blessing!

Ms. Ferrell lives just around the corner from NCCU, and several of her children attended our beloved university. Although she’s not officially an alumnus, her connection to NCCU is deep in family, history, community, and a legacy of Eagle Pride! She was decked out in her Maroon & Grey!

Standing beside her, in the shadow of Dr. James E. Shepard’s statue, was a powerful reminder of what legacy truly means. 114 years of life, wisdom, resilience, and history and a beautiful connection to an institution that continues to shape generations.

As a proud Eagle and President of the NCCU Alumni Association, moments like this remind me that our university’s greatest legacy isn’t just found in its buildings or books. It’s also found in the people, families, and communities whose lives are woven into our story.

Ms. Ferrell, it was an absolute privilege to meet you today. Your beautiful smile and undeniable Eagle Pride made this Founders Day even more special. I’m grateful. 🦅 #NCCU #HBCULegacy #HBCUPride #HappyBirthday by @nikdavisgreen

🦅 EAGLE PRIDE 🦅

Yesterday morning started in Durham celebrating our NCCU Honda Campus All-Star Challenge NATIONAL CHAMPIONS as they received their championship rings! These brilliant Eagles made history as the first all-female team to win the HCASC National Championship, bringing national recognition home to NCCU!

A special shoutout to Team Captain Ronni Butts , one of my Charlotte Eagle “babies” whom I absolutely adore. ❤️ And to Coach Clayton Mack—thank you for pouring your heart, time, and commitment into this team for years. What a moment to see that investment celebrated on the national stage!

I left Durham and ran down the road right quick to Gardner-Webb University to cheer on our Eagle football team. Because from the classroom to the field, it’s essential that our alumni show up, cheer loudly, and support our students wherever their excellence takes them to ensure they SOAR.

It was a great day for Eagle Pride! Congratulations to all our Champions.

I was so honored to be invited by the NCCU chapter of Black Girls Vote @nccu_bgv to be a panelist for their “Power Looks Like Me: Beyond the Degree” program. It was an amazing time of candid conversation about leadership, service, balancing life, life lessons and legacy building.

It was also an honor to share the time with these other amazing and accomplished NCCU alumnae, each using her experiences and influence to make an impact in our communities. There’s something special about pouring into our “baby” Eagles. 🦅

But what inspired me most were the young women in the room. Whew! They were engaged, asking thoughtful questions, finding their voices, and already stepping into leadership through Black Girls Vote. Watching them organize, lead, and create space for their peers to understand the importance of civic engagement and leadership was a reminder that the next generation is already stepping up.

The main reminder from all of the panelists - Power isn’t just about the titles you hold. It’s about how you show up, who you serve, and what you do with it. We can all take that advice.

Thank you, @nccu_bgv , for creating this space and allowing me to be part of it. These opportunities to pour back into our students are among the most meaningful parts of what I get to do. I’m grateful.
