Thank you South Florida Gay News for featuring me, some of my journey and the What’s Your Elephant movement on your cover & along with your series of local BIPOC LGBTQ leaders making a difference in the community.

Friday morning, good company, and 8.35 miles on the bike! 🚴🏽‍♀️☀️

My tri bike had been collecting dust (and had a flat tire 😂), so it felt good to get back on it and enjoy a ride with some of my swim tribe.

Big thanks to Keisha Prudent with a Purpose (@keishashanua / @tri_ing_on_purpose) for getting us together and encouraging me to dust off the bike!

A little movement, some fresh air, and good company. Not a bad way to start a Friday. 💛

Last Friday night, Shades of Black brought film, art, conversation and community together at the Victory Black Box Theatre.

From seven Black LGBTQ+ films and featured visual art to a full house and a thoughtful post-film community conversation, the evening reflected what Shades of Black is about: creating space for our stories to be centered, shared and experienced together.

Thank you to the filmmakers, artists, panelists, partners, sponsors, vendors, volunteers and everyone who showed up and helped make the third annual Shades of Black Film Showcase such a meaningful night.

Presented by South Florida Black Pride + Black Alphabet and produced/coordinated by Niki Lopez Creative for Afro Pride Federation.

How are y’all doing after that weekend?

Because Heat Wave 2026 was a whole production.

A major salute to Damon @daymeon___ and Brandon @takarishyne305 , the main organizers behind the weekend, for pulling together the moving pieces, people, partnerships, and events that made South Florida Black Pride happen.

And a special shoutout to @nikilopez19 , whose impact on the Shades of Black Film Showcase helped make that experience thoughtful, creative, and memorable.

Still taking Friday night in. ❤️

Shades of Black began with time to gather, connect, explore the art and community tables, and settle into the space before we welcomed everyone into the film program.

We heard from Afro Pride Federation and Black Alphabet, then shared seven films centering Black LGBTQ+ stories across identity, family, creativity, health, memory, resilience and joy.

As the films played, I looked around the theater and realized we had a full house. That moment made me smile.

For the third year, I had the honor of producing and coordinating Shades of Black for Afro Pride Federation / South Florida Black Pride through Niki Lopez Creative. This year brought an unexpected pivot too, and I stepped into moderating our Beyond the Screen: Community Chat.

Our panelists shared honestly, the audience leaned in, asked questions, laughed with us and stayed engaged.

Afterward, people told me how much they appreciated the films, the range of stories, the art, the conversation and the care that went into the evening. One person spoke about how much knowledge they walked away with for the price of a ticket. Another shared gratitude that, alongside the weekend’s celebrations, there was also space for film, art and meaningful conversation.

That meant a lot.

I also loved that the night continued at Chocolate City Bar & Grill, whose owner, Marcele Bassett, had just joined our conversation about supporting one another and our community spaces.

Thank you to everyone who screened work, shared art, spoke, partnered, sponsored, promoted, volunteered, supported and simply showed up.

And thank you to everyone who trusted us with your Friday night.

This is why spaces like Shades of Black matter. ❤️

We’ve shared the films. We’ve shared the artists. We’ve shared the trailers.

But this is the part we don’t want to get lost in the promotion.

Shades of Black matters because Black LGBTQ+ stories still deserve more spaces where they are not an afterthought, a special category, or one voice among many. They deserve to be centered.

🎬 South Florida stories deserve a place on the screen, and so do the filmmakers creating them.

Local filmmaker Nastassia Dillon brings Sea Salt to this year’s Shades of Black Film Showcase.

It may be the shortest film in our lineup at just under two minutes, but sometimes a story doesn’t need much time to leave something with you.

Then I have a virtual artists talk for my nonprofit, @whatsyourelephant What’s Your Elephant - exhibition What We Carry. That will be Oct 22 at 7:30. All the art was around the things we carry - pain, hurt, trauma, healing, hope.

The Nov 1, I will have a ticketed Mindful Mask Workshop & small reception for some of my art this is on display at an acupuncture & wellness center Longville Wellness @longvillewellness .
