I have had so many great moments being a #puravida rep this last year. I remember seeing the first Dreaming Out Loud bracelet pack on Instagram a couple of years ago and that pack got me hooked! I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the #puravidacrew. In this video, someone is wearing my favorite jewelry or clothing in every single image. I enjoy giving the bracelets and jewelry as gifts as much as I do wearing them. My daughter’s friends call them Mama Nancy Bracelets. I am a tried and true Pura Vida fan.

This beautiful woman used to live across the street from me. Sometimes she would call to ask if that was a “creative dismount”, or did she just see me fly off a spooked horse and land upside down on the ground. She was always making sure I was ok. Janice and Norris came to my mom’s funeral in 2008, held me in their arms in the tightest group hug, and called me Daughter. I had learned early in life not to take priceless relationships for granted. I cherished every day that I got to look out my window and know that Janice and Norris were just across the street, rain or shine. I told Janice secrets that nobody else would have ever understood. She was an earth angel. Sometimes I still find myself watching for her when I look out the front window.

The voice message at the beginning of this song reminds me of so many sweet messages left on my phone from a woman who called me daughter.

When I woke up this morning, I was sick, I called Brooke to help me get up out of bed. My nurse took a look at a very discouraged old woman and asked, “How did you sleep last night?” I teasingly began to sing “sleep, sleep, I couldn’t get to sleep”. To my surprise, Nurse Christy joined in immediately, and we sang the whole song together (including comments from the maids). My heart overflowed with joy. Nurse Christy said she has watched My Fair Lady with her mom several times. We shared happy stories and basked in priceless memories. Blossom, my tiny bodyguard, wouldn’t leave my side until all treatments were completed.

Mom’s all time favorite movie was My Fair Lady. “I Could Have Danced All Night” was her favorite song. My parents played the soundtrack on a huge stereo quite often. My sister and I danced to this song with Mom whenever we had the chance. Later Mom taught my daughters to dance with her when they were toddlers, and it became a tradition. Years flew by and dementia took over. My daughters reversed roles and danced her around the room. Three generations of women in our family know this song by heart.

The day Mom passed away, barely breathing and no measurable blood pressure, the hospice nurse said Mom didn’t want to leave us. Her angel heart didn’t want us to feel the grief that would surely come. She needed someone to let her know it was ok to go. Leaning down, Mom’s silky hair gently caressing my cheek, I softly began singing “I Could Have Danced All Night”. Sometime during the song she silently slipped away.

The Bateman Horne Foundation has virtual international support groups for people struggling with chronic illnesses. At the beginning of a session, volunteers will share a “tiny triumph” they’ve had, like getting up to take a shower, or a seemingly normal task that most people take for granted. Today my tiny triumph is waking up feeling horribly wretched to singing with an adorable young nurse and sharing happy memories.

This is what brain fog looks like. I’m in another long covid crash. The home health nurse could not find a good vein to insert the IV needle, and finally settled for a vein in my right hand. I took off my watch when she went for it, and put it on my foot to amuse the girls. Two hours later the IV vein burst. I had to send photos to the on call nurse to show her the bubble growing in my hand (I am sparing you from that picture). It wasn’t until she said I needed a pedicure that I noticed the watch on was still on my foot. I don’t know which one of us laughed the hardest. Classic brain fog moment. Meanwhile, I’m waiting for them to come back and try another vein. I think I should also get that pedicure.
