CBS Sunday Morning Feature! I’m so grateful to everyone who helped make this possible.

It’s hard to believe it’s been exactly a year since the Underground Sound Project opened, now a permanent installation at Prospect Park, accessible via the Bloomberg Connects app.

Since its launch, the project has taken on a life of its own. I’ve had the privilege of connecting with so many of you about the piece, and it’s now being used in NYC public school classrooms. Hearing how it has influenced artists, sound practitioners, students, scientists, and curious listeners alike has been deeply humbling.

This project has also profoundly shaped my own practice, and I am endlessly grateful to everyone who contributed to its realization and ongoing impact.

That's me!! The tiny black dot on the bottom, recording the spring river break up in central Alaska.
In recent years this ice break-up is at times unseasonably early. The daily temperatures are often warmer. These conditions can create a different and slushier consistency of ice. Thank you to ecologist Katie Spellman for sharing her knowledge and collaboration on this part of the project! @katiespellman

I’m thrilled to share this NPR Here & Now story. This summer, reporter Barbara Moran joined me on an adventure through the Alaskan tundra, from a thawing permafrost slump to the sounds of river ice breaking apart. The piece also explores how these recordings find their way into my art.

Thank you, Barbara, for sharing the work and creating this beautiful piece!

The fifth artist whose work we’ll be showcasing on 10/1 is @nikki.lindt seen here working in the field. At the show, you’ll hear—

Five Minutes of Permafrost Thaw, Alaska 2018
2018
Single-channel video with sound
5 minutes

“My work begins with listening closely to processes that usually escape human attention. I record inside soils, ice, water, and trees, translating these encounters into sound, visual and participatory works.

Five Minutes of Permafrost Thaw, Alaska 2018, emerged from fieldwork where I moved through a thawing landscape at close range and experienced its sounds. Encountering the permafrost thaw slump in this way brought sound into my long-established visual art practice. I began to understand sound as a time-based language that could reveal environmental change as it was actively unfolding.”

We’ll also be showing work by @nancymcohen @doraymee jenshepardart and @zeldazinn at our inaugural pop-up show POOL, on October 1st during @art_dumbo First Thursdays from 6pm-8pm, M16 @ 20 Jay St.

I’m excited to share that I’ll be on NPR’s Here & Now on September 25, closing out their Arctic Week!

This summer, producer Barbara Moran joined me for an epic hike across the Alaskan tundra to experience some of the landscapes at the heart of my work.

The feature follows our adventure through some of the extraordinary subsurface sounds I’ve been recording in Alaska — from thawing permafrost to river ice breaking apart — and explores the different ways I listen to, collaborate on, interpret, and translate these sounds through my work.

Join me on this Arctic expedition September 25!

This was the eclipse in the Netherlands yesterday, and Mark sent me this amazing picture. As the sunlight filtered through the leaves, the tiny spaces between them acted like pinhole cameras, projecting thousands of images of the eclipse onto the blind!

Artist Nikki Lindt (@nikki.lindt ) visits the BioBAT Art Space studios following her recent research trip to the Arctic!

Nikki is examining Arctic permafrost that has remained frozen for thousands of years, collected just a few weeks ago from an actively thawing permafrost slump on Alaska’s North Slope. With the help of Danielle Parsons (@danielleparsons.art ) of Wonder Science TV (@wondersciencetv ) we were able to visualize the microscopic world frozen in time! It’s incredible to see these ancient samples still teeming with life—even after several weeks in the studio! 🦠🧊🔬

______________

Artist Nikki Lindt combines sound, painting, video, and environmental fieldwork in an ongoing exploration of the underground world and environmental change. Over the years, she has returned regularly to Arctic Alaska, where this fieldwork has evolved into The Arctic Underground Sound Project, an immersive sound installation and exhibition opening at the University of Alaska Museum of the North in 2027.

Danielle Parsons is an Artist in Residence at BioBAT Art Space whose work makes imperceptible worlds perceptible. Working primarily through microscopy, photography, and moving image, she explores the beauty and hidden architectures of living and material systems.
