Some people are like clouds, when they disappear it‘s a brighter day ☀️

Finally found out where my gray eyes came from! Thanks to @ancestry I looked into my moms dad side of the family (always been a huge mystery) and my great grandpa was the man with gray eyes… same lineage as my great great grandfather who was a very successful bank robber and on the FBI’s most wanted list, he changed his name (several times), moved to California, and was never caught. Cool 😎

Olowalu Evacuation
As of 6:15 pm the fire was 40 percent contained with about 300 acres burned.

A fast moving brush fire was reported this afternoon in Olowalu. Temporary evacuation points are in Lahaina and Kihei as Honoapiilani Hwy is closed at Maalaea and near Launiupoko.
The National weather service tells me winds in Olowalu have been sustained at 40-45 MPH with gusts over 70 mph.

TEPs are Lahaina Civic Center and South Maui Community Park and Gym

Visitors should not try and drive Kahekili Hwy to get to airport as it’s extremely dangerous to drive and should be local traffic only.

More videos as Lowell was impacting Kauai that I never got around to posting.
Hopefully everyone in the state is taking these storms seriously bc every single island has taken cracks and they just keep coming every two weeks it seems.

1) taken around 4:30 PM on Monday, hours before Lowell arrived and the surf was pumping at Brenneckes, the beach park would be inundated with water and rocks a few hours later
2) my lanai from Kōloa Landing around 11 pm after we lost power and Lowell was making its closest approach
3) around 9 pm before we lost power and yes the siren went on all night long - notice the way the palm trees are blowing
4) around 3:30 AM the back of Lowell - Palm trees blowing oppose direction, super windy, not a cloud in the sky
5) my first look around the hotel property after clearing an exit route
6) The only letters left at the historic Waimea Theatre once Lowell left 😳
7) crews immediately started clearing Hoonani near Sheraton
8) Lawai Rd
9) no idea what day that was
10) lifeguard tower hanging on at Poipu Beach

We had such bad service there it was so hard to get info out quickly but I tried. I’m just now fully recovered from that storm as Nolo is knocking on our doors 🌩️ taken in Kauai, Hawaii by @nikkischen

Wainiha/Haena update

Gas cans needed! Everyone is running gas generators and not enough gas canisters to hold fuel donations so they’re having to turn away fuel which is needed.

If you have a canister and can lend to north shore write your name and phone number on the can with a permanent marker so ppl can call and return them when pau.

Heavy equipment and machinery is unable to reach them because a portion of bigger Wainiha bridge was damaged in the storm.
FROM DOT:

“Crews found that earth under the south end of Wainiha River Bridge No. 3 (longer bridge) was washed out and the bridge was now resting on its concrete wing wall. The weight of the bridge is sufficient to keep it in place and traversable for vehicles under 5 tons as crews build a temporary abutment.

Once the temporary abutment construction is completed by Monday, Sept. 21, we can return the Wainiha double bridges to a less restrictive weight posting of 15 tons.”

Until then, these residents are on their own without power, without communication unless they go to a hub to get service, with zero trash service, with cesspool overflow in their homes and yards, and desperate for big machinery which can’t get to them for another week.

This community is tough but they’re emotionally drained. And they still have a long road ahead of them and will need help well after the rest of the island gets back to a normal routine.

There’s also issues with large rocks blocking the smaller portion of Wainiha River where it splits which likely led to too much water inundating the larger portion of the river and the big bridge. DOT is aware of this and looking into it.

Mahalo to @momakoral for walking the beach every morning and bringing this to my attention 💜 taken in Wainiha, Hawaii by @nikkischen

OCEAN SAFETY UPDATE – POʻIPŪ BEACH

Good news! Poʻipū Beach lifeguard operations will be back up and running tomorrow Friday September 11th.

⚠️ Salt Pond Beach will remain CLOSED at this time.

Water clarity at Poipu Beach Park is improving; however, ocean conditions can continue to change. Please use caution and check with lifeguards before entering the water.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as conditions continue to improve.

Poipu Beach Park a few hours before Kaua’i felt the full force of Hurricane Lowell and after.
The powerful surf and storm surge swept through the entire park leaving hundreds of rocks scattered across what was once grass. Trees uprooted and picnic tables pushed aside or destroyed.
The power of the ocean on full display. 🌊
Kauai ocean safety moved one of the towers back ahead of the storm, if they hadn’t it would have been destroyed.
There was also a picnic bench under the tower with the broken stairs on Monday.

More videos of the damage in Poipu from Lowell.
The ocean washed out most coastal roads from Lawai Rd to Hoone Rd.
Rum Fire, Sheraton, Beach House severely damaged. Cars were tossed like toys across roads. Homes pushed off the foundation by the waves.
Workers and residents are very overwhelmed by the damage saying although Iniki and Iwa were much more powerful and caused significant damage across Kaua’i, those two storms did not cause as much wave and storm surge damage as Lowell did in Poipu. taken in Poipu, Hawaii by @nikkischen

Live this morning our @nikkischen spoke with Poipu residents who had their homes damaged near baby beach due to massive south shore surf and storm surge.

Surf damaged Oahu at 25 feet and it was bigger on Kauai, but the NWS doesn’t have a buoy there to measure. We’ll have the latest on @khonnews today and tonight. by @nikkischen

Just a small glimpse of the catastrophic damage from Lowell on the island of Kauai. This is Poipu at Baby Beach - dozens of homes are destroyed. One was lifted off the foundation and split in half by the massive surf and storm surge.
Lawai Rd near Hoona Rd buckled and is not passable. Crews working on getting roads cleared. As of 8:30 AM I’m told there is no route to Lihue from south shore.
Please stay off roads so first responders and workers can get to the damage and start clearing. taken in Poipu, Hawaii by @nikkischen
