I’ve been a street photographer since 2012. On paper.
In practice I have a full-time job that eats most of the day, and a family that very reasonably wants the rest. The hours I used to spend wandering around with a camera, waiting for something to happen, don’t exist anymore. I checked. Twice.
For a while I treated this as a tragedy. Then as an excuse. Then I noticed the camera was still in my bag every weekend, at the park, at the beach, in the car, at birthday parties where I’m technically supposed to be helping.
So I changed the rules. If I can’t go out to photograph, I photograph wherever I’m already going. Which is mostly wherever my family is going. They walk ahead, I fall behind. Someone shouts my name. I pretend I didn’t hear for about three seconds, which is usually enough.
Fewer hours, more attention. Turns out that’s a decent trade.
Half a stop late, as usual. Now with a valid excuse.

Fashion week in Milan. People spend months getting every detail right. Then I show up and put a prism in front of the lens. Everything you see happened in camera. Just a piece of glass, light and people.

The idea was to photograph fashion without really showing it. I’m still not sure if that’s clever or just rude. Anyway. Half a stop late, as usual. And slightly out of fashion.

I've been photographing strangers since 2012. Strangers don't complain. My daughter, every now and then, does.

We were up in the mountains on holiday, and she had to put up with the flash going off at dinner, or the camera showing up at some odd moment when she’d rather it didn’t. Honestly, the odd moments are kind of my specialty. That’s usually where the picture is.

There’s one in here with a pair of legs and half a butt. She looked at it and said she doesn’t get it. Fair enough. I’m not sure I get it either. I just know I like it. The light, first of all. Then something quieter. A bit of peace that lasted a second, that nobody else noticed, and that I somehow caught exactly like that.

Maybe that’s what this whole thing is about. The moments on holiday, or anywhere really, that nobody else is watching.

Anyway. Half a stop late, as usual. With the flash on. Sorry, kid.

Little set “on the road”

I drive this road only once a year, and every time it puts on an incredible show.
Beautiful views and a sky that’s always different here. There’s a beautiful Christ statue at a gas station along the way, and every time I pass it I think, one day I’ll take a photo of it. Next time I’ll try to be more creative. For now, this moment is enough. ✨ by @nikkor83
