As part of the whole visual Brand identity I designed for Bad Weather Lab, I wanted to create a standalone logo mark that already feels organic, placing the brand within an outdoor context without relying on obvious symbolism. I wanted to create a biomorphic form that works on its own, whether as a small label, embossed on gear, or printed large on clothing and bags.

At the same time, the logo isn’t meant to be distracting or overly dominant. It leaves room for the graphics, which play a much bigger role within the overall brand identity.
In the end, I arrived at a form that can be read and interpreted in many different ways. It also functions as a monogram that, depending on its orientation, reveals the initials of the brand: BWL. by @niklasthyen.cc

Some impressions of my first ever solo bikepacking trip through the Taurus-Mountains in Turkey.

Going into this trip, I knew this trip would bring me far outside my comfort zone in pretty much all possible ways. One day after leaving Antalya I found myself already questioning everything and planned my way back, after doubting I would have enough food and water for the first big climbs leading through only small villages and forests. I decided to play it safe and take the longer but easier section back to civilization to rethink my whole route.

Characteristic for everything that should follow after this doubtful moment, things took a turn for the better. A small mini market appeared after the next corner, owned and run by the major of a small village and his family. Not just only providing me with the certainty that enough supply-points will follow on my route, but also offering me to sleep in the community house and take a shower, my confidence that finishing this trip was possible, was back and I took it from day to day from here.

In the next 8 days I got to learn about the unbelievable hospitality of Turkish people. Offering and sharing warm beds and meals, more çhai than I could drink and even inviting me to a wedding.

Çok teşekkür ederim türkiye

Field Guide & Observation Journal for the @klattermusen @badweatherlab hike in Grunewald.

We designed a printed companion for a hike about slowing down and noticing the small things you’d normally walk past. It brings together short pieces on the flora and fauna of Grunewald, a map of the route and an observation journal. At every stop, the journal invites you to look around, look inward and note what you see and feel.

The design takes its cue from Klättermusen’s visual language and from the spirit of their campaign „The Call“: whimsical, playful, a little unexpected. The cover is built from two stickers, applied differently on every copy, so each zine ends up as a one-of-a-kind object.

The zine is also the first step towards a design system we can build on. The sticker principle will carry through the coming editions and keep them recognisable as one series.

Edition 01: The Call. Grunewald.

Grunewald Hike Bad Weather Lab x Klättermusen Pt. 2/2

A day out in Grunewald, slowing down, paying attention and reconnecting with what’s close to home. That was the idea behind our first-ever hiking event.

We followed “The Call” with a hike through the forest, accompanied by the field guide we created for the occasion, a little invitation to look closer, reactivate the senses and notice what usually goes unseen.

Thanks to everyone who joined us! We can’t wait for the next one❤️

Washboard roads, sandstorms, lots of cows, bringing 400+ episodes of watching Outdoorboys videos to use to dry our cloth after a day in the rain and headwinds on maybe the toughest day on our trip. by @niklasthyen.cc

Im slowly also mentally arriving back in Berlin after 5 intense and beautiful weeks in Central Asia. In the second half of my trip I changed my hiking shoes for my bike and joined @samu.kuhn on his final stretch on his 2 1/2 month cycling journey from Usbekistan to Kasachstan. We followed a route established by Matthew Crompton called the „Kaszakh Corner“ which in just a few days let us through so many different landscapes and after some tough climbing, getting caught in a thunderstorm on the ridge and a front flip over the handlebars, rewarded us with some A+ downhills afterwards. by @niklasthyen.cc

I redesigned my @romesnowboards right before spending some time in the Lanzo valleys in early spring.

The idea was to create a design that works on two layers:

One simple, geometric layer that reads clearly from a distance, in video parts etc.

And a second layer with more detail that contrasts the first and reveals itself up close.
