This is a post-dive/surf/swim guide on how to clean and store your Nikonos V camera between uses, per the instructions that I was given by a longtime Nikonos user after purchasing my first. He was so generous with his knowledge, and now I’d like to do my best to pay it forward with everything I’ve learned about these tools 🛠️

💧🎞️Nikonos V Post-Dive Care Guide: Part 1💧🎞️
When I first got into shooting film underwater, a friend and mentor shared his *extremely thorough* notes on how to care for his Nikonos V. Most of them were *very strict* guidelines on post-dive maintenance—because saltwater? It’s a menace. Rust, corrosion, and deterioration can happen fast if you don’t clean your camera properly. In short, he put the absolute fear of [the Film] God in me. And honestly, I’m grateful. Because of him, I’ve learned how to take really good care of my gear.

Like the ocean itself, these cameras hold a certain mystery. They have an incredible history, but few technicians are still equipped to service them. My hope is that this tutorial helps us all—collectively—take better care of these legendary cameras. They’re one of my favorite photography tools, and I plan to keep using them for a long time.

I’ve been meaning to make a video like this for years, so I’m excited to finally contribute a proper tutorial to the analog/film space on how to clean a Nikonos V. I’m also thinking about filming a pre-dive setup guide on greasing and prepping O-rings—let me know if that’s something you’d be interested in 🗣️
