I am pleased to announce our next exhibition, Nicholas Szymanski, Planet Earth. Saturday 17th 3-6pm

Titled after the 1980 Devo song ‘Planet Earth’, a satirical, detached observation of ordinary human life and societal absurdity. Nicholas Szymanski’s paintings encapsulate the artist’s interests in color relationships, materiality, meditative application, silence, and seeing as
opposed to looking. As contemplative objects, Szymanski’s paintings offer a present resting place, one of inactivity and dwelling amidst the temporally unstable and frenetically topical nature of obsessive individualism often
observed in current times.

B scoba, Conversation with a Stone
at Nik Pence Gallery
On view Sept 5th-October10.

Titled after the poem written by Wislawa Szymborska, the writer seeks knowledge that the stone may contain but fails in finding entry and understanding. In this body of work B Scoba meanders through material accompanied by the words of Szymborska and the architecture of Juan O’Gorman. In 1954, O’Gorman turns away from functionalist building with the completion of “Casa Cueva”; he sought to find harmony between human and rock once again through organic architecture. However, “Casa Cueva” is short lived, in 1969 O’Gorman sells it to Helen Escobedo and the house is forever changed as O’Gorman returns to the square.

These new works are a series of architectural studies seated on improvisational tableaus interested in the feeling of architecture. The tableaus are paired with wall studies attempting to intervene in the movement of space and present varying timelines in the variety of materials used throughout the space.

Currently on view in a group exhibition at @nikpencegallery, ‘ImageLayer_Bless YourHeart.tif (Bluebonnet)’ continues @katquay’s exploration of the space between the digital and the physical.

Inspired by the familiar layers of photo-editing software, the work transforms a flat image into a sculptural experience. Textured glass acts as a digital “filter,” distorting 3D-printed florals set against an illuminated backdrop, inviting us to reconsider how we see and experience images.

See this work and more now at Nik Pence Gallery. Open Saturdays 12-6p or by appointment. taken in Franklin, Michigan by @nikpencegallery

THE ARTIST SELECTS:

The Artist Selects is a ceramics presentation co-curated by artist Chris Salas and gallerist Nik Pence, to coincide with Salas’ first show with the gallery as well as NCECA’s 60th Conference in Detroit.  The selection is drawn from a private collection and focuses on unsung, underappreciated or anonymous ceramic artists.  It celebrates the democratic process of finding art and beauty in all corners of the ceramics community.

Some pieces are attributable, but the artists may not have gained recognition or have been lost to time.  Some pieces are marked, but the marks are indecipherable or untraceable.  And other pieces are unmarked and anonymous to all but their makers.  But each piece is an object of beauty in its own right.

Opens Saturday March 21
2-6pm.

Anthony Giannini
Still Here Despite it All
2022-2024
Acrylic on canvas
5 x 14 ft (diptych)

Michigan-raised Anthony Giannini currently lives and works in Detroit. He earned an MFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design and bachelor’s at Michigan State University. This bold and colorful diptych, part of the artist’s Chromophilia series, employs luminous color and material, engaging the viewer cognitively, emotionally and spiritually. This body of work marks a change in Anthony’s artistic practice, which was prompted by the isolation and looming sense of dread during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. It is a direct departure from past series where colorful backdrops were completed with representational imagery of political scenes and systems of power. This bright abstract composition seen here draws parallels between the expression of humanity, lived experiences, and the physical and conceptual malleability of paint. Anthony is interested in the complexity and possibility of color, its ability to heal and connect us all.

Willie Wayne Smith
Madonna of Some Small Change
2025
Acrylic on canvas
20x18 inches

Willie Wayne Smith is the Co-Head of Painting at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Working mostly in acrylics and airbrush, his practice is highly influenced by various art historical movements including Photorealism, Assemblage, Pop Art, and Surrealism. Through his artistic practice, he has worked to develop a unique visual language, creating paintings that feel simultaneously familiar and unsettling. Dreamlike and often bizarre, Smith’s compositions seek to challenge the viewer’s perception of depth and reality. Check out this piece and others at Nik Pence Gallery on Saturdays 12-6pm

Amy Sacksteder
Scour and Glint
2024
Panel: oil on collaged canvas on stretched household linen
Frame: found plastic, glass, etc. fragments from artist’s walks and runs, along with ceramic and glass from her family land in Georgia saved for her by her mother, tile adhesive, and fluorescent acrylic on wood
18.5 x 14.5 in

Amy Sacksteder is an artist and curator originally from Augusta, Georga. With studios based in Ypsilanti, MI and New York City, she is also a professor in the School of Art & Design at Eastern Michigan University. Her mixed-media pieces explore the relationship between landscape and artifact, delving into how each can act as a vehicle for human connectedness – both to each other and to our surroundings. Using cut paper, ceramic, and other mediums, her artistic practice seeks to investigate the significance of place on the individual and encourages us to find personal associations with our environment and the world around us. In this work of art, the fragments of canvas that are collaged onto the surface of the linen napkin come from larger paintings. As such, this piece is part of the artist’s “painting erratics” collection because it showcases pieces of stone or earth displaced from their original location.

Allana Clarke
A Rhythm Black & Sweet #23
2025
Hair bonding glue on linen

“The material’s inherent chromatic blackness is not a monolith; it is a complex, nuanced field from which other hues and meanings suggest themselves. It becomes a floating signifier. They propose a blackness
that is plural and transformative: a site of becoming where unforeseeable forms and meanings continuously coalesce and dissolve.” Allana Clarke

Come see Clarke’s work in person at Nik Pence Gallery this Saturday from 12-6pm
