Bathed in natural light and layered with understated technical intention, this production environment belonging to multi Grammy and Dove Award winning songwriter/producer Jonathan Smith (@smith_jon) reimagines what a modern studio can feel like.

Designed as both a high performance creative workspace and an inviting architectural retreat, the studio balances the precision of world class acoustic design with the openness and ease of a residential inspired environment. The result - a space that feels expansive, effortless, and functional without ever appearing overtly technical.

Unfolding through a series of interconnected creative spaces, the studio includes a spacious Producer Suite, a dedicated amp / ISO, and a large Editing Suite capable of transforming into an additional live room when sessions demand flexibility. Every room has been wired for full band live tracking, allowing the space to effortlessly shift between intimate writing sessions and large scale recording workflows.

From the beginning, the vision centered around creating a visually open production suite that could still perform within the expected metrics of a professional Control Room environment. Every decision was approached through the lens of balance, pairing architectural softness with acoustic accuracy, and refined material palettes with forward thinking building science.

NILES collaborated closely with the clients and their interior designer, leading the acoustical design, audio integration, and construction of all studio related aspects of the project. The process was deeply collaborative, shaped the collective creative vision, aesthetic instincts, and the desire to build a studio that felt distinctly personal rather than conventionally commercial.

Anchoring the suite is a monitoring system built around PMC 8-2s from @pmcspeakers_pro. Selected for both their scale and precision, the system delivers the clarity, depth, and translation required of a modern professional production environment while remaining effortlessly musical within the room.

The final result is a study in restraint and performance. A space where architecture, acoustics, and creativity exist in quiet alignment. taken in Nashville, Tennessee by @niles

This project began as an exploration—what’s possible when overlooked space is given intention. Tucked above a three-car garage in the stunning Smoky Mountain town of Cashiers, North Carolina, this attic conversion became a true creative retreat.

Despite its compact footprint, the studio delivers remarkable accuracy. The vision was simple: create a destination where clients can step away from the pace of city life, drop their shoulders, immerse themselves in the surrounding landscape, and reconnect with the creative process. A space that invites both focus and ease, while maintaining a thoughtful continuity with the aesthetic language of the main lodge.

In collaboration with GC Custom House (@customhouse_guitarcenter / @gcpro_official), we were brought in to deliver seamless audio integration, precise acoustic isolation, and a balanced listening environment. Each room is fully isolated and anchored by carefully layered treatments—bass trapping, diffusion, and absorption—working in harmony. Full lite doors preserve a sense of openness without compromising performance.

As with many of our builds, the real work lives behind the walls. The VRF mechanical system is whisper quiet and meticulously tuned to meet strict studio noise floor requirements, while maintaining a comfortable and stable environment. You don’t hear it, but you feel it.

At the center of the room sits an highly integrated @thisisapiaudio 2448 console, paired with PMC 6-2 monitors (@pmcspeakers / @pmcspeakers_pro), delivering clarity and translation you can trust at the highest level.
This space does more than inspire visually—it performs. Whether producing, mixing, or simply exploring ideas, it offers a flexible sonic palette that adapts to the moment.

A thoughtful collaboration between NILES, GC Custom House, and @kessler_cuffman

Looking back at 2019, Graybox (@grayboxnashville) set the bar with a natural light–drenched design that redefined what a “home studio” could be—pushing the envelope of both aesthetic appeal and modern building science. Every detail was handled with care to ensure the visual softness is matched by uncompromising acoustical accuracy. Designed to remain timeless, Graybox is a refreshing breath of air for years to come.

While the aesthetic focus emphasized natural light and openness, the architectural acoustics and mechanical design are anything but typical of a home studio. The Control Room, though modest in footprint, is a finely tuned “golden ratio” suite with intentional treatments, anchored by a pair of Barefoot (@barefootsound) monitors, while the Live Room gains a sense of scale and sonic depth from its soaring 16’ ceiling. Expansive glass throughout amplifies the natural light and enhances the immersive atmosphere, creating a space that feels as inspiring as it sounds.

This 950 sq. ft. environment was crafted as a creative hub equally suited for video capture and music recording. The design balances acoustic precision with an open, airy canvas ideal for TV and Film. The client’s vision was clear: a space where any engineer, producer, or artist could walk in, sit down, and get to work with ease. With intuitive flexibility at its core, the studio can host a film crew with dynamic camera options, capture a full live band tracking session, or house a string ensemble—all while maintaining effortless flow and seamless audio integration throughout. Graybox has been home to countless recording sessions, and video captures for Capitol Records (@capitolcmg), Meinl Cymbals (@meinlcymbals), The Dove Awards (@gmadoveawards), Gibson (@gibsonguitar), just to name a few.

A look inside our flagship DOLBY (@dolby), ATMOS mix and mastering suite for Universal Music Group / Capitol CMG  (@universalmusicgroup / @capitolcmg).

From the outset, the intent was to create a room that felt as inspiring as it was accurate. A space where world class acoustic performance could coexist with a modern, refined architectural language. Every detail was approached with intention, balancing visual dynamics with acoustic precision, and aesthetic restraint with forward thinking building science.

At the heart of the room is a monitoring system from our friends at PMC (@pmcspeakers / @pmcspeakers_pro ). Anchored by IB2-XBD LCR and supported by a fully integrated immersive monitoring environment concealed with a combination of CI-65’s and CI-140’s in the architecture itself. The system was designed to disappear, allowing the focus to remain entirely on the music.

Beyond the visible finishes lies a highly engineered environment. The suite is acoustically highly isolated from the surrounding structure through floating slab & floor assemblies, high performance sound reducing wall systems, extensive bass trapping integrated throughout the walls and ceilings, STC doors and sound locks, and dedicated ultra low noise mechanical systems. Together, these elements create an environment where artists and engineers can work distraction free at any hour of the day.

As a fully immersive 360 degree ATMOS environment, every surface, angle, and material was carefully considered to optimize time domain performance and spatial accuracy. The result is a room that delivers remarkable consistency throughout the room while maintaining a sense of openness and air rarely found in technical spaces.

The space doesn’t simply look effortless. It performs with purpose. Every detail exists to ensure that what each artists hears will translate.

Looking back at one of our favorite projects from 2022 for guitarist and producer Kevin Skaff.

Tucked quietly into East Nashville, the studio was conceived as a private creative retreat. A place where Kevin could move effortlessly between writing, recording, and producing commercial release quality work for his band A Day to Remember (@adtr) and the many artists who pass through his world.

The vision was to create a complete recording environment, without allowing the technical requirements of the space to overpower its sense of warmth or ease, balancing technical precision with simplicity. A mix ready Control Room anchors the studio, joined by an open Live Room designed to capture the weight of heavy drum performances. A dedicated ISO booth allows amps to be pushed without compromise, while a quiet adjoining lounge gives artists space to step away and reset.

Among our favorite details are the floor to ceiling diffusers in both the Control Room and Live Room, handcrafted by our install team and designed to function not only to improve the acoustic response, but to enhance the architectural dynamics within each suite. In the Live Room, floor to ceiling fractal bass trapping / diffusion hybrid creates a sculptural rhythm across the walls, shaping the response while making an immediate visual statement the moment you enter.

Every room is integrated as part of one seamless recording environment, allowing anyone to plug in and begin creating without interruption. The Live Room feels open, natural, and alive, while the Control Room provides the accuracy, comfort, and focus needed for critical listening.

At the heart of the Control Room is a beautiful monitoring system by our friends at @atc_loudspeakers, supported by @dynaudio subwoofers and managed through @trinnov processing. Together, they deliver gorgeous accuracy at the mix position, creating an environment where decisions will translate beyond the walls of the studio.

The result is a space that feels equally suited to experimentation, focused production, and a performance that can happen when the technology quietly disappears into the background.

A journey back to 2022 for a look at one of our favorite DOLBY (@dolby) ATMOS mix environments, created for Grammy Award winning producer, engineer, and mixer Ryan Hewitt.

Located in the heart of Nashville’s studio community, Ryan’s facility, Stratosphere, is home to three immersive mix suites, each designed around a singular philosophy: technical precision without sacrificing warmth, beauty, or inspiration. Our intent was never to be bold, but rather to disappear into the background and create the space for great art to be made. We’ll be sharing the remaining suites soon.

Ryan’s body of work speaks for itself, from Oasis and Red Hot Chili Peppers, to Noah Kahan and Blink 182, Smashing Pumpkins, and countless others. Beyond that, he has been a trusted friend, mentor, and championed of our team for over the years. His belief in our tribe has meant more than we can express, and it remains an honor every time he invites us to help shape another space.

From the beginning, the vision was to create a room that felt as inspiring as it was accurate. Natural light fills the space, softening what is often expected of technical environments. The palette remains intentionally restrained, allowing texture, and materiality to define the experience while performance quietly does the heavy lifting beneath the surface.

Much of the room’s sophistication is intentionally hidden. Behind the fabric is a hybrid of bass trapping and diffusion, paired with a 13 speaker immersive monitoring system from our friends at PMC, anchored by their 6-2 XBD line, and surrounded by discreetly placed CI series speakers. Rather than becoming a distraction, the integration disappears into the treatments, allowing the focus to remain on the art, the natural light, and the sense of openness within the room.

As a complete retrofit into an existing space, every acoustical move was carefully considered to optimize imaging, time performance, and translation. The result is an immersive environment that feels remarkably effortless while delivering the precision Ryan depends on, allowing him to work without distraction and get lost in the details that matter.
