The design process started with this gold foil Phillip Jeffries mural of trees. From this I decided to create an elegant forest setting for sushi (under a gazebo, of course). The remaining design elements quickly stemmed from that. Guests are seated on a wooden bench. Wood flooring runs throughout the restaurant, extending up the walls to form columns that support the wooden paneled ceiling. A skylight at the top of this “Gazebo” allows guests to view the moonlight. Tile resembling fluted Tree bark supports the Jade Marble Sushi Bar; the jadeite tracks back to the Early Jomon period. Golden floral sconces represent blooms throughout the forest and hanging Rattan lanterns create a somber ambiance. Since no sushi experience is complete without Rice Wine and Sake, we surrounded the Gazebo with a parade of Tsubo’s and Tokkuri’s.
Each column of the Gazebo has a hook for handheld lanterns that guests can “take” when departing to light their path back to civilization.
