I liked watches! I still like watches! Do you like watches?
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
The GMT is easily my favorite watch complication and the one I find most useful.

Now the big question is, should I get the PCLs brushed out šŸ¤” taken in New York, New York by @nils.o.t

Last week my son graduated from elementary school (5th grade here in the US). He was one of two valedictorians, ate a few pieces of the paper his speech was written on while the other valedictorian gave her speech, and got two awards for academic achievement. Overall, a proud parent moment!

What does this watch have do with it, you ask? Not much other than that I wore it for the graduation ceremony. taken in New York, New York by @nils.o.t

Cracking a joke at Ben Gurion Airport:

Some years ago I was traveling to the West Bank and flew in through Ben Gurion. At border control they asked me the purpose of my travel. I tend to think honesty is the best approach so I told them the truth. I was going to Ramallah for work.

I did not get my passport back and was told to go sit on a bench. I got off pretty easy though. Security came and asked me if I knew anyone in Tunisia. I asked them if they meant Morocco as that’s the only North African stamp I had in my passport. And I told them one of my former bosses was Moroccan. They looked somewhat confused and with that my interrogation was over and I was on my way.

When I was flying out I was warned to arrive early to the airport as I probably wasn’t going to get off so easy this time. And they were right. When you enter you get a sticker on your passport with a serial number. The last digit foretells your fate. The scale runs from 1 to 7 if I recall correctly, 7 being the highest level of threat. I got a 6…

So off I go to an area where they take all my electronics and then I go to a separate room with a guard where I had to undress down to my underwear so my clothes and body can be scanned for traces of explosives. Before he puts the wand into my underwear (that I’m still wearing) he said I had to tell him if I had anything dangerous in there.

I mean, honestly he couldn’t have teed it up any better and my infantile brain simply couldn’t resist. So I said something along the lines of ā€œfunny you should askā€¦ā€.

Crickets. There was not a single movement in his face. He was not amused. A sense of humor was clearly not part of the job description.

We then spent a few more awkward minutes together and after which I was escorted onto my plane. taken in Ben Gurion Airport, Tel Aviv by @nils.o.t

It’s a bit of a mystery to me why Patek doesn’t make rubber straps available in a range of colors for the Aquanaut. And yes, I know they do make other colors. But good luck trying to actually get one.

It’s a good thing then that there are options out there like @tempo_mat so I can still pimp my 5167. taken in New York, New York by @nils.o.t

Summer’s upon us and the school year’s coming to an end. My son’s ā€˜graduating’ from elementary school, with gowns and all. He’s even valedictorian for the graduating class.

Swedish school’s are a bit different. The only real celebration’s when you graduate 12th grade. But there’s often some more informal celebration when you finish 9th grade as, in theory, you could choose to end your education at that point.

So a party was organized at one of my classmate’s parent’s chateau (yup, I went to a fancy boarding school) and there was going to be alcohol. But we needed permission from our parents. And there was no way my parents were going to grant me that.

But my friends convinced the organizers to let me drink anyway but I had to promise to behave. Well…

I pregamed with vodka I’d somehow managed to score and then drank plenty at the actual party. At one point I apparently fell down some stairs, landing at the feet of the supervising parents. I’ve been told that I stood up and slurred something along the lines of ā€œI feel so much better now than I did beforeā€ and just walked off. I say I was told as it’s the only time in my life I’ve been blackout drunk.

And now I imagine my wife looks at me in much the same way as those parents must have when I buy yet another watch after having said I’m done… taken in Sigtunaskolan Humanistiska LƤroverket, SSHL by @nils.o.t

Granted, this movement is not haute horology by any stretch of the imagination. No tobacco stained teeth of a master watchmaker have gnawed at the anglage here. But for what it is I find it rather pleasing to look at.

My only complaint with the #ck859 is the hands. I can’t but help think it’d look so much better with stick hands, along the lines of the ones on some of Naoya Hida’s watches. But where could I get that done without it costing more than the watch itself šŸ¤” taken in New York, New York by @nils.o.t

When you’re ā€˜protected’ by the Zambian Defence Force:

I’d just moved with my parents to Zambia as the Gulf War was about to kick off. It’s highly unlikely there were any Baathist sleeper cells lurking in Lusaka but Sweden was the protecting power for Israel (i.e. Sweden was looking after the interests of Israel as they didn’t have an embassy of their own in Zambia) and the Zambian government wasn’t taking any chances. So they posted commandos to our house.

They’d let me check out their battle rifles (H&K G3, if I remember correctly) and hand grenades (apparently only to be used if a crowd got out of control). Although questionable on their part, as a kid just about to turn teenager I thought it was awesome. But my confidence in the elite of the Zambian army was about to be rocked…

One day one of our regular guards alerted us that one of the soldiers was unwell. We found him on the floor in our garage, moaning and sweating profusely. It transpired that on his way to our house that morning a woman had bitten him on inside of his thigh. WTF? As a 12-year-old in the pre-internet age the many probable reasons this may have occurred weren’t immediately apparent to me. But I did know I wasn’t impressed.

To this day I remain skeptical of the quality of the armed forces in most countries and the value of armed guards, aside from making you a more high profile target. I have no skepticism about the quality of my #chopardrevolution though. taken in Lusaka, Zambia by @nils.o.t

Adventures in the Hermit Kingdom: Back in 2009 my wife and I decided we should go to North Korea for her birthday (as one does).

It was our first full day in Pyongyang. As we stepped out of Yanggakdo Hotel to our car it started raining. So our guides insisted we should go back up to our room and get jackets.

Back up we went. As we approached our room we saw that the door was ajar. Probably the cleaners. But as we stepped in, to our surprise, we saw instead two uniformed ladies going through our suitcases.

Also startled, they muttered something about looking for laundry. As luck would have it we’d stayed in Beijing for a few days, so we did have laundry!

I decided to make the best of an awkward situation and handed our bag of laundry over to the stern ladies from the security service.

And that’s the story of how we had our laundry done at no cost by the North Korean security service. In fact, it was the only we managed to get laundry during our stay in the DPRK.

And my #habring2 obviously has nothing to do with the caption. I think for that trip I was wearing a Speedmaster. taken in Yanggakdo International Hotel by @nils.o.t

The #blackbaypro was a frustrating watch for many. Either it was too thick or it was too similar to a #1655 and so on.

Well, it is a bit thick. But it works (for me). And having previously had a 1655 it’s definitely more inspired by than a copy of my favorite vintage Rolex. If anything it’s closer to being a smaller version of the current #explorerii

And then of course you have the ones who just don’t like #tudor And that too is OK. I don’t like all watch brands either. But what gets me is the snobbishness. The ā€œit’s a poor man’s Rolexā€ or the guy commenting on Hodinkee who keeps repeating that a Tudor is the most expensive way of showing that you can’t afford a Rolex (granted, the frequency with which the comment is made probably indicates some more deep seated ā€˜issues’).

Wouldn’t it be nice if instead we just tried to enjoy our own watches without worrying about what others might think (or for that matter judge others)?

A Swedish department store back in the day put out a very simple but brilliant chart breaking down customers along the axis of taste and confidence. So you have people who are confident in their good or bad taste (i.e. they know what they like and choose accordingly). And then you have the people who are anxious in their taste (e.g. those who are influenced mainly by what others tell them they should like).

Personally, I’d always appreciate more a collection that is confidently in ā€˜bad’ taste than anxiously in ā€˜good’ taste. I may not like the watches but at least there is passion behind the choices made.

And I’m confident that I like my BB Pro! taken in New York, New York by @nils.o.t

I’m dog sitting for a week and I can hardly express in words how excited I am! Putting away all my photo gear as I somehow don’t imagine tripods and a Staffy are a good combination. So no more posts for a while after this one. taken in Moomin Valley by @nils.o.t

Adventures with watch industry customer service:

Imagine you’ve handed in a watch (for the record, it wasn’t my 5170) for warranty service as the hour and minute hands are dusty / scratched (a couple of other issues too but let us not digress). A QC issue on the part of the manufacturer, if you will.

The watch comes back from service and when you ask what work was done the boutique manager responds, in writing, and I quote: ā€œThe hour and minute hand were cleaned as best as possibleā€.

Would you maybe also wonder whether they were taking this piss? Mind you, this is a brand under one of the big watch groups.

Also, black is the new orange (because I ran out of orange straps…) āš«ļøšŸŸ  taken in New York, New York by @nils.o.t
