I’ve always associated Pakistan with Karachi.

For the first time in my adult life, I saw its mountains, and they blew my mind. Three times what I’ve seen in Hawaii. Twice what I’ve seen in America.

And for the first time, I understood something. Every civilization that lives in the shadow of mountains like these isn’t just surviving near them, they’re sustained by them. Glacier water running straight off the peak. Fruit that grows because of what the mountain feeds the soil. Air that hasn’t touched a city in hundreds of miles.

There’s no hierarchy here. The kind that I grew up with in Karachi. There are only people happy to be alive, happy to have you in their presence, full of love and so quick to give. This is the frequency the mountains hold.

I got to stay at a beautiful homestay in the village of Gulkin, with a family that gave me the kind of welcome you only get from someone who’s known you your whole life. @theghulkinn

It’s no surprise that real friendships aren’t made in cities anymore. I’ve been traveling since August 10th, over a month now, and it feels like every single person I’ve connected with along the way has added something meaningful to my life. These are connections I will hold.

I thought I knew this country. Turns out I’d only known one corner of it.

I came to sing and dance. I didn’t know I would end up crying on my dear sister Emmi’s shoulder after a workshop that shifted something deep in me.

That’s when it hit me that healing is communal, not private. It happens in places where people hold space for each other, where kindness is seen and honored instead of overlooked. These are also the places where there is no alcohol being served, and no cruelty of any kind where every being present, human or animal, is treated with reverence.

There is so much medicine magic that I am taking with me. These 5 days have been transformational in so many ways.

My biggest takeaway is incorporating the magic of singing, dancing, and playing music every single day, no matter what “life” may present.

I had no idea what to expect when I walked into this portal on the 12th of August. I came back with a medicine family: people who are truly on the same wavelength as I am.

As we continue to integrate all that we’ve learned, I pray we carry it forward: the way of the elders, the thinking of the forest, the language of the rivers, the wisdom of the beings who were here long before us and will remain long after. May we be medicine for the animals, for this beautiful planet, as ancestors of the generations still to come.
