POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Stills from “Ente Katha”, a seven-part documentary series that I filmed in 2020 and released four years later, taking viewers through a snippet of my parents’ story.

For four hard years, I sat with hours and hours of footage more precious than anything I could ever own. And that changed something in me. More on that soon… by @nimtom_

I have a pattern. When I go all in on a vision, I spend the whole time making sure everything goes well and when it finally happens, I never let myself take it in. I don’t celebrate or stay in the room. My brain jumps straight to “what’s next?” That is exactly how “The Wonder Years” began, only a few short months after my first exhibition, “Echoes of Us” in the fall of 2024.

Once TWY wrapped, my brain did the same thing again...chasing the next idea until I was exhausted. That was when I finally took the hint to stop searching and sit with what I had just done.

I still can’t fully explain it, in words or in pictures. These photos show the room, but they can’t show the 8+ months behind it: the late nights, the emails, the cold calls, the DMs, the pitches to anyone and everyone. I walked into nearly every art store in Manhattan and Long Island. I saved every dollar from my client work to fund a space that felt right and bring in the elements that were needed to match the experience I had envisioned. All of it was driven by the belief that this was important and that no one else was going to make it if I didn’t. I heard far more no than yes, and this day happened from the few yeses I got. Stone, Blake, Gemma, Alia and Natasha were part of those yeses, and they joined me without fully knowing what they were signing up for.

To my friends and family who showed up before the doors opened and on the day itself: thank you. And to every person who donated toward the kids’ art supplies and helped alleviate some of the costs: you made this possible and I haven’t forgotten that.

It’s all still a blur so I lean on these photos more than my own memory. I have them thanks to @angribeen, art director turned impromptu photog, who nodded and took my camera when I handed it over. As well as @edithannphoto , who showed up straight off the train from work that weekend to capture some of the joy that filled the gallery.

My wish for a year from now: that the ideas I’m building today find the bigger spaces and the right support they need (I promise to stay and take it all in!!!).

A few years back, I spontaneously joined my parents on their trip home. I was on a mission to explore the corners of Kallara and its surroundings. While Sanil uncle took lead in navigating, I had my camera in hand and parents in tow as we came across a “thuruth” or an islet. It was here where I first heard the story of a legendary poet and creator of a unique art form. The King at the time gifted him 9 “thuruth”, including the one we were accidentally adventuring through. Moral of the story— explore as much as you can and ask questions because there’s so much history and stories waiting to be uncovered.

A 2017 vision slightly reimagined in 2026 // Three years into taking photography seriously, I made myself a promise: no matter how busy the work got, I’d always keep space to create just for me. In 2017, that meant convincing my friend Joanne to wake up at sunrise, drape herself in my mom’s old saree, and scout a location with me for no reason other than wanting to make something beautiful. I don’t know how I found the time between grad school, thesis travel, and ten to twelve hour work days, but I did. Oh, to be twenty-something again.

As the work grew, that promise started to shrink with it. Dedicated days became maybe I’ll get to it this year. Somewhere in the climb, creating for myself turned into the thing I kept meaning to come back to.

Lately, as the kind of work I’m drawn to shifts again, I’ve been living in my archives. That’s how I found these images. I don’t even remember what sparked them. My first instinct was to critique: the exposure is too bright and airy in that very 2017 way, the composition could’ve been tighter. But that’s the nature of growth. Hindsight is always sharper than the moment you were in.

What struck me more than the critique was the distance. The images my 2017 self thought were exceptional, my 2026 self looks at and thinks, we’ve come a long way. And there’s something exciting in that gap. It means the promise was never broken, just paused. So I’m renewing it: to create, experiment, and find my footing again, the same way I did back then, at sunrise with Joanne, a saree, and nothing but the want to make something.

wild ride to get here but I wouldn’t change a thing because it’s taught me that growth and change do not have an age limit as long as space is created with patience, kindness and understanding ♥️

outtakes from “The Wonder Years” (2025)

I struggled to see clearly for some time and all it took to change that was five little artists, who let me into each of their worlds full of color, love and imagination.

When one stranger hands another a story they wouldn’t tell most people, magic occurs.

I know this cycle because I’ve lived it more than once. You find a craft you love and go all in, learning every piece of it with a kind of hunger. People notice and they want in, and it becomes steady, which isn’t a bad thing. But steady has a ceiling and eventually the hunger starts pulling you toward the next edge. That pull is hard to explain to people who only know you as what you’ve already built. So everything goes quiet for a while.

Then one day, a stranger walks in and sees the direction you’re pulling toward before you’ve even said it out loud.

Iman was that stranger. She came to me with a story about love, loss, and reclaiming her own power, written down in the form of a poem before we ever filmed a single frame. The moment I read it, I knew it was the backbone of whatever we made together.

Thank you, Iman, for trusting me and giving me the strength to begin my chase toward the next edge.
