Nina Garstang
Entangle, Untangle, Retangle
10 metres of beach-foraged industrial fishing plastic rope, untangled, washed, spray-painted and Viking-braided
120 × 36 × 36 cm
£650

Nina Garstang’s multidisciplinary practice explores relationships between people, place and the natural environment, with the sea at its centre.

For The Warp and the Weft, she has transformed ten metres of beach-foraged industrial fishing rope through untangling, washing, spray-painting and Viking braiding.

Its coloured strands evoke the body’s circulatory and lymphatic systems; fluorescent hues bring contemporary synthetic intensity into an organic visual language.

The work brings Scandinavian craft and folklore into dialogue with material associated with the Sussex coastline. The piece can be installed to suit the space available and collector’s preference through direct consultation with the artist.

Interested in this work? DM Bond Street Gallery or email info@sarahshaw.co.uk. Pop in and see us during gallery hours, or message us to arrange a private viewing.

‘Again And Again: Revisited’ (2026)
(Sculpture as Performance)
In May during the Brighton Festival ‘Again And Again’ was performed at The Adelaide Salon Exhibition ‘Act O’ at the Brighton Dome and later at The Adelaide salon a The Royal Pavilion Art Gala. It was a live sculpture pertormance centred on collaboration, tension, and repeated negotiation. Two bodies are bound together by stretch bands, creating a shifting physical connection that resists and responds to every movement.
Through walking, pulling, yielding, and returning, we tested the give and take between us - a continuous exchange of force, balance, and intention. On this occasion the work explored how relationships are shaped through physical, social, and spatial dynamics.
Each action becomes a form of dialogue, where movement replaces language and tension reveals the complexities of cooperation, resistance, trust, and control. Repetition is central: through attempting, adjusting, and trying again, the performance examines limits, shared capacity, and the ettort required to move together. As a sculptural duet, Again And Again redraws the space through bodies in relation, asking how far collaboration can stretch before it pulls apart, and what becomes possible when two people remain connected. Ihe pertormers test rules, establish patterns, disrupt them and try again. They explore how far they can move together, when cooperation becomes resistance, and what happens when individual intentions come into conflict with shared movement. The
bands eventually come off, but the relationship they have created remains: movements are repeated, remembered and echoed without the physical connection.
In this way, Again & Again: Revisited is both a revision, a prequel and a continuation - a sculpture made through bodies, material, space and time, asking what it means to remain connected while negotiating the limits of individual and collective possibility. Time to meet the artists for ‘The Warp and the Weft’ ; an open call exhibition showcasing the work of Sussex based artists and makers.

It’s so lovely to see you support each other for the exhibition. Please post a comment, share when you can and like these posts. It really helps with the promotion of the show.

Meet the artist: Nina Garstang!

@ninagarstang ‘s multidisciplinary practice explores the relationship between people, place and the natural environment, with the sea at its centre. She works across painting, sculpture, installation and print, often using materials collected from the Sussex coastline.
For the warp and the weft, Nina has created ‘Entangle, Untangle, Re-tangle’ from ten metres of industrial fishing rope foraged from the beach. Washed, untangled, spray painted and Viking braided, the rope has been transformed from something discarded into something considered and constructed.
The work is a simple but effective reflection of the relationships at the heart of Nina’s practice; human and marine environments, damage and repair, the natural and the industrial. The rope itself becomes a physical thread through these different ideas; entangled, separated and brought together again.

‘Entangle, Untangle, Rectangle’
10 meters of beach foraged industrial fishing plastic rope untangled washed, spray paint & viking braided
120cm x 36 x 36cm

‘Entangle, Untangle, Re-tangle begins with what is given: discarded plastic fishing rope washed ashore on Shoreham Port beach. Once functional and purposeful, the material carries traces of its previous life within a network of human, industrial and marine activity.

I approach the rope through a process of negotiation rather than imposing a predetermined form. It is untangled, painted and reconfigured through Viking braiding techniques, bringing a personal cultural inheritance rooted in Scandinavian craft and folklore into dialogue with a contemporary material associated with this stretch of coastline. The material’s physical properties establish both constraints and possibilities within the making process. (Continued on next slide)

@ninagarstang BAP selected artist for ‘Altered States’, our Photo Fringe 2026 exhibition at Gallery 19a.

We’re excited to introduce Nina Garstang, one of our selected artists taking part in this year’s exhibition.

Cyanotype has become an ongoing way for Nina to explore relationships between water, light, material and the body. Her earlier works on watercolour paper move between oceanic, bodily and synthetic forms, often using plastic transformed through light and shadow, photography and chance to create images that resist a fixed identity.

In Shifting States, Nina pushes the photographic image beyond the still. A cyanotype seascape on canvas becomes the surface for moving projection, allowing light and liquid to continually alter what has already been fixed by sunlight and water.

The work shifts between still and moving image, sea and body, natural and synthetic continuing Nina’s interest in photography as something fluid, unstable and in a constant state of transformation.

ALTERED STATES, Brighton
Alternative Photography’s exhibition as part of Photo Fringe
2026.

Brighton Alternative Photography (BAP) comes to Photo Fringe with an exhibition celebrating the expanding possibilities of contemporary photographic practice. BAP first ever open call brings together a diverse group of showcasing work that challenges conventional ideas of photography and image making.

Working beyond the camera, the exhibition embraces alternative photographic processes, experimental darkroom techniques, photographic sculpture, installation, mixed media, and process-led practice. Through material experimentation and innovative approaches, the exhibiting artists explore themes including identity, memory, the body, landscape, ecology, time, and transformation. Together, the works demonstrate photography’s potential as both an image and a physical object, where light, chemistry, touch, and material become integral to the creative process.

Discover the creative possibilities of cyanotype printing in one day

Cyanotype is a painterly, low-toxic photographic process using light-sensitive cyanotype fluid, light and water.

During this one-day workshop we’ll explore the history and science of cyanotype before getting stuck into making. You’ll learn how to prepare paper and fabric, expose and develop images using objects and photographic negatives, and experiment with wet-on-wet application and layered compositions.

Most materials and equipment are provided, including a range of materials and negatives to experiment with.

You’re also welcome to bring your own objects - flowers, leaves, utensils, semi-transparent materials - or fabric to print onto.

By the end of the day everyone will have a series of prints to take home.

Suitable for all levels.
£85 | Saturday 26 September | 10.30-16.30
