“There I stood: 22 weeks pregnant and the most uncomfortable in my body I’d ever been, inches from a woman I didn’t know, watching her blue eyes stare directly into my brown ones in total silence.

“Now, move a little closer.”

Any insecurities I entered the room with were heightened. The minutes felt like hours.

Luckily, by this point, I was about 75 percent through Broadway star Sutton Foster’s “Leading Women” retreat at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, Massachusetts, and I’d already learned quite a few new tools for both pushing myself to do hard things and recognizing my reactions without judgment.”

“With 12 private beaches, endless aquatic adventures, and possibly the warmest hospitality on the planet, it’s no wonder Turtle Island is so difficult to leave.

On our first night at Turtle Island, a private island resort in Fiji’s Yasawa archipelago, my husband Alex and I were about 15 minutes late to happy hour. Our bure, or villa, was perched on one of the island’s best vantage points, and we had been stalling to soak in all the colors of the sunset when we heard singing from the bottom of our steps. Down the pathway—made from stones marked with names and memories of past visitors—we found an enthusiastic group of “bure mamas” serenading us with Fijian tunes.

By the time we walked across the white-sand beach to the lounge, where the other guests had already gathered, tears were flowing. A couple we had a brief but chipper encounter with earlier that day was standing at the center of the group. The man was giving an emotional goodbye speech, reflecting on their anniversary trip to Turtle Island.

He was pouring his heart out, speaking of the deep impression the place had left on him, and about precious time spent with his wife, including long conversations during candle-lit dinners on the floating pontoons. “We used ChatGPT to come up with questions for each other!” she chimed in, lightening the mood.

The others seemed invested in his speech, but not at all surprised. Apparently, tears were almost a nightly occurrence as guests prepared themselves to leave the island. I, however, was stunned.

I’d been traveling to luxury resorts around the world for a living for almost a decade, and as hard as it can be to go home, I’d never once seen a fellow adult cry about it (though I’m sure it happens occasionally behind closed doors). What Alex and I didn’t know yet was that we were joining the Turtle Island “family,” as Erami, a lead member of the staff, would soon be reminding us each morning.”
