30+ hours of researching, sketching, planning, painting, thinking, editing in 59 seconds 🎨 This piece is one of my bigger bladderwrack paintings and named after the island “Mull Bladderwrack”.

This summer I had a lot on at the gallery and outisde of work. This painting was in the back of my mind for months before I had the opportunity to sit down and start working on it. 🖼️

Half way through I had some doibts about how it was going to turn out. But a special someone reminded me to trust the process - which I did.

Hours of painting in 54 seconds 🕰️ This particular painting was the result of many hours of sketching based on Celtic knotwork patterns, reading books on colour theory, and exploring artists whose works have inspired me in general.

Aside from disliking the depressing start, I agree with this audio and I try (and often struggle) to not worry about things too much. Especially when I am painting, it’s important to try and keep other peoples voices, past criticism, future criticism and other negative thoughts out of the process.

Being mindful of the process and enjoying it above all is something I try to do all of the time. After all, it is a joy to paint! 🎨

🎨 Finally back in the studio and creating new work! 🖼️

I have been itching to paint since my trip to London and the painting course. There has been a lot of new ideas coming up and a quite a few sketches to choose from. This one made the cut and I look forward to finishing it

Hope you like the back of my head because I was really struggling to film this without getting in the way!

Would you travel 500 miles for a painting course? 🎨 I did and I would do so again! Earlier this year I was awarded the West Dean Bloomsbury Prize at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour exhibition. The prize was a two day painting course on visual storytelling with Harsh Agrawal.

Harsh’s background is so interesting - in addition to being an amazing watercolour artist he has worked in film and animation. This was definitely apparent in how much he had to share about storytelling in through art.

We spent the weekend learning about technique as well as interpretation, colour theory and much more. Everyone on the course was lovely and the weekend went by so quickly!

Highly recommend to anyone looking to learn more about watercolour painting - I for one am looking forward to applying the skills learned from this weekend

Mixing it up with a little bit of green 🎨 I did this experiment a while back - instead of a yellow gradient on the background I went for a vibrant green

A few process pictures and inspiration behind this bladderwrack painting 🎨 I wanted to create a slightly psychedelic layout, which would do justice for the yellow and pink faded wash of the paper. Planning the composition so that you would see the colours blending was important to me as achieving the background colour can be equally difficult as the painting of seaweed.

The many stages of painting 🖼️ It is all well and good posting satisfying timelapses of the painting process, but they by default leave out alot of the details of the journey from blank page to a finished painting.

Sketching, digital sketching, painting, stopping, reassessing, looking, thinking, second guessing and comparing are all important parts of the process. It’s rare to skip any of these stages in any painting and often the brush touching the page can be a shorter time than the rest of it.

This painting was inspired by a literal squiggle I drew on a whim 🖊️ A doodle some might call it! Most of my paintings start with either a composition or colour palette and build from there. I try not to overthink the layouts but rather find an organic shape to follow - like this whimsical ‘squiggle’ 🎨

It’s foxglove season! I love this time of year on Mull where you can walk pretty much anywhere and see these beautiful pink flowers. Foxgloves seem to pop up everywhere on the Isle of Mull and they bring that summer feeling - even when it’s raining

The largest commissioned piece to date 🖼️ 3+ meters of handpainted wildflowers from the Isle of Mull. Each flower was painted from real life using watercolour.

One of the most painstaking projects I have undertaken. Ittook real concentration not to spill any coffee or water on the roll over the six months it took to complete this
