You can’t ride an ultra on 🍉. I scratched Badlands 2026 after 560km and around 10,000m. But in amongst all the heat and hardship - there were many moments of joy and connection. The start… great swag and pure vibes. Fan girl moment meeting @sherry.cycling😍 and a super fun rollout.

I had started 🤮at 40km in - but got things under control (so I thought) and reached the top of the infamous climb to the Mirador del fin del Mondo without too much difficulty

Things start to get really hot… 🥵 and started to really take its toll

The next hours did not go well and I arrived in Gorafe very very sick and unable to continue onto the desert loop that night - kudos to the amazing guys at Bike Cueva Gorafe for giving me a bed…

Partially recovered I join @matthewgillis for the desert loop at 2.30am - and continue. I still cant eat - but it’s cold at night and then I press on into the next day.

Make it to Gor - rest a bit and manage a little pasta. We take on at least 4L of water here - there is nothing for the next 100km… 🌵. I eventually make it to Tabernas at 4am, By now I have crashed twice, broken my light mount, and seriously questioned my sanity… I still can’t eat 🤢

Day 3 and melon becomes my savior. I am eating a little but I burned so many matches by now that I fear it may be too little too late… I keep going. Did I mention it was hot? 🥵

The climb over to Cabo del Gato for some reason becomes a massive nemesis - it’s steeper than anything I have ever climbed - it’s almost totally hike-a-bike, and it feels like it lasts a lifetime… the cafe at the bottom is closed, I try not to cry.

I see the coast. I tell myself not to be fooled. I am fooled… Almería is NOT around the corner, it’s another 100km

Crash again on the potholed and rubble strewn road - start to lose my SoH for the 576th time…

The infamous beach section! Almeria is close! NO… you are wrong about this

Find another track, push your bike, accept your fate. Sand is hot - really really hot

My race ends at the holy grail of the Almeria Burger King. I eat a burger. It tastes like heaven. I have nothing left. I can eat now, but the depletion has cut deep and I have no more to give… what a course! by @ninaw1968

Not the best look - on a bus back to Granada - I made it Almeria but after 4 days - 3 of which I could eat only melon after suffering heat exhaustion in the desert in temperatures near 50C - I was lucky to make it this far. Full rundown later. Thanks for all the support. ❤️ by @ninaw1968

Three weeks ago whilst dying somewhere on an alpine pass I was thinking to scratch this race. What was I thinking - too old, it’s too hot, too hilly, too remote. But some sound advice from @bikeandruncoach and support from @hariacyclingclub here I am - figuring that if I don’t start I can’t finish. Let’s give it a shot! @matthewgillis by @ninaw1968

The rig is ready for @badlandscc but not sure that I am… The Enve MOG got some much needed gear expansion with an SRAM mullet thanks to @streambikesnl and a big girl tyre makeover (tubeless seating achievement unlocked) with a pair of Pirelli Cintauratos and I pared back the storage with some new Tailfin packs. It still feels pretty heavy but it’s mainly food, water and power to deal with long stretches of nothingness. My next job is the dreaded bike pack up 😬 ready to fly on Friday… by @ninaw1968

Today, on the way to Doonbeg, came across some interesting turf cuttings - once cut and partially dried they are assembled into almost calligraphic forms. Quite beautiful. by @ninaw1968

On Saturday, I created my own finish line for the LostDot 101 in Guadalupe at CP3. I scratched with intention, not due to hunger, fatigue, or injury, but because my goal of General Classification was out of reach. To finish was another day, a mad dash to the airport and missing the finishers party. After covering 1050 km and 19,520 m of elevation, I felt content to call it a day.
The weather was very challenging, and several poor decisions cost me time that I just couldnt claw back. Starting in heavy rain and freezing temperatures, sleep on the first night was almost impossible. Match #1 burned.
I reached CP1 in good time and CP2 with an hour of slack, but a storm blocked my route back into Spain, forcing me to wait in a mountain town. The following day, I scaled the massive Serra da Estrela in glorious sunshine then gunned for El Portillo but faced strong winds, leading to another sleepless night. Match #2 was burned.
I continued to ride strong - but had lost my purpose to carry on, and a booked hotel in Plasencia sealed the deal. My final day on the bike was a dream, and I rolled into Guadalupe very happy.
My bike, thanks to @streambikesnl , was great, but I needed more gears for sure. My kit was almost dialled but just not warm enough. What did work was nutrition, I was always able to eat and was never nauseous, a huge win for me.
To the @lostdot101 crew, you were fantastic, though some parcours were borderline sadistic!
Special thanks to the amazing women who supported each other, ensuring safety, especially at night. Emma and Sarah, you were incredible companions on the road! Thanks also to @sportyprice for the lead-up support and Tactic kit. Big shoutout to my WhatsApp crew for the encouragement, and to @hariacyclingclub for fetching me in Guadalupe with Fanta and crisps!

Onwards and upwards! Next up is the Tactic Alps challenge in August with @tactic.cc, followed by Badlands in September, but first, some recovery!
