The Big Brother of the Brooklyn Chapter of the Kuroryoushi. This gentle dreadlocked giant is the perfect example of a peace loving samurai who won’t even put his hand towards his belt unless a real threat approaches. Preoccupied with Visual novels, eroge, and writing his newest philosophy thesis (oh he’s a grad student at colombia), he often prefers to delegate tasks to the trainees. This is why, for two fairly young demon hunters, Neji & Reba are already pretty good at their jobs. Despite his reluctance towards battle, Lex is far and away the strongest swordsman the group has, and because he’s very aware of this, he elects to involve himself in the least amount of demon hunting, stating the theoretical possibility of a single strong hunter creating a strength amplifying effect amongst demons, or in his words; “my nigga, if I go out there, YOU won’t be able to. Just chill, you got this”.

Alexandre is a charmer, a bonafide sweet talking gentleman. His Kuroryoshi connections run through his paternal Grandfather. His father is aware of the backside, and an extremely skilled swordsman, but he is what the Kuroryoshi call a “Yamaneko”: Rogue swordsmen who take jobs outside of Kuroryoshi networks (often times at odds with them). Lex has dedicated his time with the Kuro to restoring his Grandfather’s legacy, and cleaning the stain of his father (which is especially difficult, because despite years of training he still can’t beat him). Lex’s mother is the famed Hatian Shaman Madame Bibi, a woman notorious for hexing those who cross members of the black community in Brooklyn. Rumor has it, Lex has direct blood connection to Baron Samedi himself, but he swears that’s only a rumor.

Screw the Omega is a story about Neji Okalu, a Nigerian-American first-year college student, who moonlights as a demon hunter in New York City. As an urban fantasy, the story centers around supernatural entities and how they impact the lives of young BIPOC in the inner city. The plot follows Neji's quest to liberate mankind from the most evil, oppressive force ever known to man: The Death Drive

Alongside Neji in this journey are his long time friend & hunting partner, Reba "The Ripper" Daniels, as well as his rival & new teammate Yemisi

This is a tale of swords, spirituality, and the streets.

In a world where what we think and feel have the capacity to take physical shape, what does your fear look like? Your love? Your hate?

Our story truly starts after Yasuke’s disappearance from Japan. The Samurai, through the aid of portuguese slavers, found that Africans were not difficult to come by, and in time a Daimyo from the snowy hilltops of Sendai named Date Terumune, father of the famed Date Masamune, would make a fateful trade.

Terumune made an order for 30 young african boys to be brought to the shores Japan, and through cruel happenstance, a young prince was among the captured. The igbo prince grimaces and groans as he's pushed, his anger visible for all to see. This catches the eye of the young Lord Date. Years later, the prince finds himself with a new life in the blistering cold northern tip of Japan. With a new name as well, Hitora: The secret tiger. Hitora was an exceptional swordsman, he was of above average frame for an igbo man, which for that measure stood a clear foot above most Japanese. He had actually developed a kinship with Lord Date, who, after having learned of Hitora's past, provided him with a station and territory (but no title or surname).

Alongside Hitora, the other 29 young warriors were all powerful soldiers in their own right, and with their black skin and darkly coloured armor, they all earned the collective name that would define them and their descendants for generations: They became known as The Black Hunters; The Kuroryoshi(黒猟師).

Reba the Ripper, or just “Rippa” to friends, is a trainee Kuroryoshi just like Neji. They’ve been close friends ever since Neji moved back to New York from Philadelphia for highschool. The two students began an Occult club at their school as a front for demon hunting operations, and the two have been partners ever since. In her everyday life, Reba is a shy, unassuming black girl, one might even say she disappears into the background if not carefully observed. However, on the “field” is where she lets her true colors shine, gleefully and sadistically destroying demons with her kusarigama. She’s begun to form a close friendship with Yemisi, especially after Neji begins alienating himself from the organization.

Reba was born in Newark New Jersey to a Banker & a Doctor. By all accounts, she was all set to live a pretty normal middle class life, but things have a funny way of going wrong when you least expect…

On her 9th birthday, Reba’s parents threw a party for their baby girl, all her friends attended, even a few teachers. Everyone was having a great time… Then, in the blink of an eye, as she was blowing out her candles, for a split second nothing but dark...then for 5 seconds...violent screams… By the time she could make sense of what had happened, everyone in attendance was dead. Their throats sliced, and their chest cavities missing their hearts.

The police reports came up with nothing, Occult society surprisingly came up with less. No one knew what caused all that death that day, and Reba says she doesn’t remember anything about her life before the day after the event. Regardless, Reba’s shaman grandmother took her in, and taught her the ways of the backside, as well as how to spot different demons. Because of her grandmother, Reba’s knowledge of the Backside surpasses even some seasoned hunters and occultists, however her combat prowess is still in it’s developing stages. Be that as it may, she’s Neji’s closest ally, and an invaluable member of the Brooklyn Chapter.

Yemisi is one of the only living descendants of the legendary african swordsman Yasuke (for real this time). So it turns out after Mitsuhide burned down Honnouji, Yasuke didn’t get captured like the stories say. Because of his duties as chief demon hunter for the Oda clan, Yasuke was busy fighting the pack of demons Nobunaga had contracted with after they had been let loose due to him committing seppuku. Somehow after this battle, he managed to charter a ship back to Africa and found himself settled within the Oyo Empire in his later years. Yemisi is the latest of his progeny.

Yemisi was born to a wealthy, yet broken Nigerian home. Her father is Segun “The Shade” Omoaroso, the strongest Kuroryoshi to ever live (or so they say, Neji swears up and down by his uncle). Segun is a good man, kinda. He means well. His first wife, Yemisi’s mother, was actually the daughter of another Kuroryoshi, Ibrahim Akinriade, the founder of the Kuro's Atlanta chapter, so Yemisi is oozing with Demon Hunter royalty. After a massive scandal, it came to light that Segun had sired twins with a young huntress he was training.

Because the prospect of two more of the strongest hunter’s offspring running around, The Uncles (colloquial term for the higher ups of the Kuroryoshi) forbade the young girl from terminating the pregnancy, and upon giving birth, she was transferred away to the Los Angeles chapter. Her two children were left with Segun’s wife, Kemi, to care for. Kemi was loyal to the Kuroryoshi, and as such fulfilled her task, resentment towards her scumbag of a husband be damned. And despite it all, it warmed her heart to see her daughter love her half brothers regardless.

With an axe to grind against her dad and all men for that matter (except her brothers, and Lex for some reason), Yemisi arrives in New York after being transferred from Atlanta to avoid a succession scuffle with her siblings. Will she play nice with her new teammates? Or does she have her own agendas to fulfill...

Neji is a descendant of the famed african samurai Yasu- I mean Hitora. A demon hunting swordsman who came to Japan as a slave, but left his post decades into his service while on an expedition to Korea. Born in the United Kingdom to the main branch of the Okalu heritage, a tragic incident during Neji's infancy left his mother dead and his father serving a life sentence in a Magical Prison under the Tower of London. He was then left in the care of his uncle Duke, who swiftly whisked him away to America. His time with his uncle wasn’t for long though, as the Okalu man’s Kuroryoshi duties made him an improper guardian for the infant child. After that, Neji’s uncle left him with some family in Philadelphia as he went off to go fight demons and the like. Neji spent the next 14 years knowing nothing of his uncle’s true profession, only being taught tidbits of his heritage during his occasional visits. However upon inquiring to his other relatives, he was told to ignore the idle superstitions of his uncle. All this changed when Neji unknowingly activated his Evil Eye during his last year of middle school. His uncle then scooped him from his home in Philadelphia and enrolled him in highschool in New York, teaching him swordsmanship and common demon hunting techniques in his off time. Despite being quite adept in traditional Japanese sword techniques, Neji opts for a less straightforward approach in combat. Being a close affiliate of The Network(A neighborhood demon hunting ninja clan situated in the Bronx) prompted Neji to deviate from the typical techniques of the Kuroryoshi, employing a mix of his uncle's sword style with the use of tools and simple hand sign based spells.

Neji knows that the organization his family represents is keeping dangerous secrets, but as long as he can keep his block safe he'll put up with the politics. That was the case though, until =[SPOILER]= Now Neji bides his time levying his ancestors' clout to avoid prying eyes as he undertakes his plot to upend the Backside's religious structure.

Ndukwe "Duke" Okalu

Neji's uncle & caretaker.

Once upon a time Duke & Neji's father, Buzo(Chibuzor), were the two Ace hunters of the London Kuroryoshi.
Due to a tragic string of events (that we'll cover in the series, I promise) Duke found himself in the sole care of Neji. Eventually leaving him with their sister, Neji's aunt Nneka, in Philly.

After Neji begins to show signs of occult ability in
his early teens, Duke scoops the boy up and begins
training him in the ways of the Kuro.

A warrior as sharp witted as he is compassionate,
Duke rarely takes shit from anyone, especially not
his rascal of a nephew

Hyoukiri

The Fang of Frost & Flame

We've all seen inner demons that partner with the main character , but we've never seen one who heckles the MC for not holding a candle to his ancestor.

The eternally unimpressed Aragami of death & despair, Hyoukiri is a demon who once plagued the snowy hilltops of northern Japan, feeding on the souls of people who begged for warmth before being taken by frostbite. After being sealed by Neji's Ancestor Hitora, he began service as the Okalu family's heirloom demon.

After an incident during the Biafra war the sword housing Hyokiri is lost. Only to be found decades later by the hero of our story.

Neji Okalu. MC of Screw the Omega.

I've posted him before but I wanted to post some more art that the incredibly talented @wxnger_art has been cooking up as well as a quick character description:

The hero of our story. This foul mouthed, bitter brained, misanthrope might look like a tough cookie on the outside, but spend any time to get to know him and you’ll find that the pages match the cover perfectly. Neji fancies himself a bit of a rebel, a revolutionary even. He sees the corruption that exists in demon hunting society (and the world at large for that matter) and decides to take the situation head on, by killing who he fancies is the demon causing all of this; Thanatos, the death drive.

I'll be posting more characters leading up to chapter 4's release.
