Willing Heart

Played live on acoustic guitar from an abandoned building. When it’s hard to know what you are listening to, sometimes it’s good to know what is 100% real.

This song was originally written for CMT’s Nashville (with @lorimckennama) and they created a beautiful version of it with Lennon & Maisy (Maddie & Daphne).

The scene they used it in was season 4 at the Grand Ole Opry. It was amazing!

But since then, it has become a cornerstone for my own writing and personal performances.

It is also (FINALLY) my latest release on Spotify (with special guest Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls).

I wanted to take 30 seconds to introduce myself here.

I'm Nini. Singer-songwriter. Lead singer of Antigone Rising. Mom. Wife. Recovering perfectionist.

These days I'm releasing the most personal music I've ever made under my own name while trying to figure out social media, algorithms, and why writing a song somehow feels easier than posting about it.

Hayden Panettiere was a force.

I remember when we wrote this song, with her in mind, knowing some of the details of the scene, and I remember watching the episode as it aired for the first time.

I’m not always invested in the shows that end up using songs I’ve been a part of but this show was different. There was something special about it and Hayden was a big reason for that.

I hope she loved this song as much as I loved to hear her sing it and I hope she knew how many lives she touched along the way.

Recently I was reminded that there are people with real power in this industry who believe women age out.

I didn’t really need to hear it because I’ve lived it. I know how the doors close and who they close on. But learning it about someone I looked up to was kinda heartbreaking. Because when a person with that kind of influence believes it, you can trace it back to all the choices being made by them - around them.

And then I walk onstage (this was Boothbay Opera House last week) and people are singing along, buying merch & staying after to say hello and share their stories. That’s my reality, and it doesn’t match theirs.

A lot of songwriting starts title-first. I feel like it gives you a place to zero in on or a home plate.
