Sorry for the heat wave, I just got 1 degree hotter.

Haha, as cliché as it might sound, feels like just yesterday I was packing my bags to leave for college, excited for my NIFT life, and let me tell you, it was everything and more.

So many versions of myself I would want to thank. That 16 year old self, a rebel who just wanted to make a statement so strong that she decided to only fill one exam and that was NIFT.

Writing this feels like one last time I can flex how cool a degree can get. I am a fashion grad, kids.

Something more than a thanks to my parents for letting their child get a degree they still cannot fully explain to other people. No shit, I also don’t know how to explain it to people who still think NIFT is a stitching course. And to the extended family who once compared my NIFT degree to a Usha course, this one’s for you. :)

Jokes aside, everything I do is to just catch this glimpse of proud in their eyes.

To Didu, every younger sibling can fly high because elder ones run the show. Thank you for choosing to become a surgeon so that I can take up fashion as my career. I know my sky is big because you taught me how to paint it from day one. (Trying hard not to cry.)

To every friend I made, lost and am taking from this place, it was never ever really about the degree.

Apparently, if women care about it, it can’t be that serious.

I’ve often wondered why fashion is so easily dismissed as frivolous, even when the knowledge behind it is anything but.
Maybe we’re so accustomed to seeing the finished garment that we forget to question everything it takes to bring it into existence. Or perhaps we’ve learnt to take certain kinds of knowledge less seriously because of the things they’re associated with.
I studied Fashion Technology, and I think that changed the way I look at clothes. More importantly, it changed the questions I ask about them.

This is one of the perspectives I hope to bring to Aangan: looking beyond the obvious, questioning what we take for granted, and making room for conversations that deserve more attention.

Because who gets to decide what counts as serious knowledge, anyway?
