New series: Light Rules 💡

Six classic exposure rules that let you nail your settings by reading the light: bright sun, snow, cloud, sunset, even the full Moon. No meter guesswork. First up, the one that started it all.

Light Rules · Sunny 16

Bright sun and hard-edged shadows? Set f/16 and make your shutter speed 1 over your ISO. At ISO 100 that’s 1/100 s, or the nearest full stop: 1/125 s.

Want a softer background? Trade stops: f/8 at 1/500 s is the same exposure.

Want silky water at midday? Back at f/16, add a NiSi ND1000 and 1/125 s becomes an 8 second exposure.

Save this for your next shoot, and follow along for the next five rules.
