Rootbound Memory
17.5" circumference
Copper on wood

A bonsai is a tree shaped by careful pruning, wiring, and patience—its growth guided by human hands. This piece reimagines that tradition in copper, reflecting the manicured Japanese-style trees that became part of Los Angeles landscapes after the upheaval of the Vietnam War.

Formed rather than grown, this copper bonsai carries the tension between control and resilience. Like many communities that arrived on the West Coast after 1975, it speaks to transplantation—roots interrupted, histories reshaped, and new identities cultivated in unfamiliar soil.

What appears delicate is also enduring. Copper holds its form, slowly weathering over time, much like memory itself.

Chief's Peak
Copper and wood

Chiefs Peak has always held a special place in my heart. I've climbed it and felt the quiet strength of that mountain overlooking Ojai Valley. When I started working on this piece, I wanted it to carry that same presence — steady, grounded, and full of Ojai’s spirit.

It took me two months to finish! I started over once and almost gave up on the idea of fabricating the copper frame. Then, in just one day of showing, it was gone. Sold. Bittersweet — because I didn’t get nearly enough time with it after it was complete.

But the story has a perfect ending: it went to a fellow Ojaian. Somehow, that feels like exactly where it was meant to be, and I couldn’t be happier knowing it found a home with someone who understands its roots.

Matilija
24" x 18"
Copper, aluminum and wood.

The Matilijia poppy has always felt especially close to home. Native to Southern California, this striking wildflower grows around the Matilija Canyon and Ojai Valley--and its name is connected to the Chumash people and the Mat'ilha village near Matilija Creek.

Often called the "fried egg flower" for its large white petals and golden center, these wildflowers are as bold and resilient as me and the landscape they call home.

I've been surrounded by their beauty for decades now, so creating them in copper felt like a natural way to bring a little piece of home into my work.

If you're @vcfairgrounds stop by the Professional Art Exhibit and say hi to this beauty.
Now through Sunday, August 9th.

People have been asking since high school why my work was never there. Guess it's finally time—better late than never.

The magic is in the details. Carving copper with my Dremel—one line, one texture, one step closer to the finished piece. Thanks @dremel for always having the right tool for the job.
