Im finally feeling like I’m breathing. If you have known my life the last few years. Freedom is something I haven’t felt since 2017. From the roller coaster of 2017, the accident in 2019 and then the pandemic of 2020. 2022 is about freeing myself and allowing for happiness to return 🥰

Sometimes the best part of travelling is discovering a place you never expected to love. 2 nights turned into 8.

My dream town to live in is simple: water, peaceful, and near a major city without feeling like I’m in one.

Ericeira checked every box.

Aside from Copenhagen, it’s the only place in Europe that immediately felt like home—and one of the first places in years where I felt completely at peace.

It’s also perfectly located for exploring the coast, with easy access to Nazaré’s coastline and giant waves, and Sintra’s palaces, forests, and fairytale atmosphere.

If you’re visiting Portugal, add Ericeira in and you might end up staying longer than planned. 🤍

Bucket list ✅

I grew up watching Gladiator, (my all time favourite movie along with Save The Last Dance) knowing one day I’d stand inside the Colosseum.

Seeing the arena where people once fought for their lives, not for a movie, but for survival is a lot heavier to take in.

Being here and having the guide explain the parts of the arena and what happened in each puts the reality of its history and what a gladiator had to do into perspective.

I’m lost for words trying to describe how this hike made me feel. No pic or video I could share could fully show you how breathtaking it was.

July 4/26 left at 5:15 AM to check off sunrise at Pico do Arieiro, then hiked to Pico Ruivo — the highest peak in Madeira — and continued all the way to Achada do Teixeira for pickup.

• Distance: About 8.4 km
• Steps: 15478
• Duration: 4h 35m
• Summit Elevation: 6,106 ft / 1,862 m
• Trails Completed: PR1 to PR1.2
• Level: Hard

Maybe that sounds easy to some, but this pushed me mentally, physically, and emotionally.

Walking this mountain alone made me reflect on the last few years. It broke me, almost killed me and the pandemic tested all of us. But those years didn’t defeat me — they quietly built the strength that carried me here.

This mountain wasn’t easy, but I kept repeating to myself:

“Come on, Mare. You got this. Let’s gooo.”

The moments of silence, with no one around, under the blazing sun and through so many different types of terrain, were humbling in a way I’ll never forget.

This was more than a hike. It was a reminder of how far I’ve come.

If only I had Drogon to get me there. 🐉

The hike to the IRL Dragonstone was NOT part of the plan… but wow, was it worth it. 😍

I stood here imagining the dragons perched above, Jon arriving by boat along the shoreline, and the discovery of the Dragonstone caves!

As you could figure, I’ve been recreating GOT in my head 😂👑 No CGI required. (If only the darn castle was real!! Sorry for the spoiler!)
