The premier of Religion of Sports and HBO’s ALEX V AROD was an unbelievable experience. Directed by Gotham Chopra and Erik LeDrew, it’s a series to watch not only for baseball fans but for anyone who enjoys an honest portrayal of a flawed character, an icon, coming clean to the world. Had the good fortune of having a brief conversation with the star of the hour, Alex Rodriguez, and the opportunity to offer him a humorous apology for judging him back in the day, to which he laughed and offered a warm handshake. Absolutely starstruck from meeting our very own Superbowl champion, New York Giants’, Michael Strahan! Oh, and Tom Brady was there too. @bahel_nikhil, thanks for making this happen.

Today, March 25, 2025, is my mother’s, 85th birthday— a little less than three months after she left her physical being, on new years eve. By then, it had been nineteen months since her extremely rare and aggressive cancer was diagnosed.

The ‘Dr.” in front of her name was an indelible part of her identity. She had worked at a government hospital in New Delhi for most of her career. Later, she volunteered at a charitable hospital in a village That stint, unfortunately, was cut short when my father had a stroke that left him paralyzed. She then devoted her life to be his primary caregiver, for the following nine years, till he left. It was after that that she found herself lacking purpose.

And then, the diagnosis. Angiosarcoma of the liver. My mother had managed to find one of the strangest and most mysterious forms of cancer. Her Oncologist found some nine cases in the world. I joked with her that even in sickness she was helping the field of medicine as researchers traversed unchartered territories and tried new treatments on her.

Needless to say, she was more than just a doctor. As moms go, she was one of the special ones. After a hard day at work, she would make time to inspire me to read, by reading with me; teach me card games; listen to music— it is to her credit that I am able to appreciate all kinds, regardless of genre. She took me to the movies. Her pursuit of the spiritual is in a large part responsible for my own desire for that same wisdom.

She allowed herself to be vulnerable to me in her last few months. She became the child and I, the parent, albeit with a lot less patience, regrettably. But, I do know that she appreciated the fact that we were together in those final weeks and days. And in those last moments.

I had her in my arms at the moment that she breathed her last, and for that I will be forever grateful. In the moments before, I told her how proud she had made me with all her accomplishments and how her granddaughter had once called her “Girl Boss”. She was surrounded by family as she slowly passed into whatever lay next.

As a big fan of the “beautiful game”⚽️, it was exhilarating to finally catch up with MAIDAAN, a film about Indian football’s ‘Golden Generation’. Aside from the sense of pride this film instills about the incredible, little known history of this era (1950s- early 60s), what gratified even more, was the performance of old friend, Gajraj Rao @gajrajrao as the Bengali Sports Columnist, Roy Chowdhury. His incredible physical transformation, attention to linguistic and cultural nuance as well as maintaining the dignity and humanity of his otherwise ‘villain of the piece’ character, shows why he is amongst the elite actors of the Indian film Industry. His journey to the top of his trade is an example to all, of how persistence does indeed bear fruit.

On a personal note, meeting Gajraj bhai again at @spokenfest in Mumbai, after some three decades, it was remarkable to see how his feet were still firmly planted in the ground. In a crowd of his fawning fans, his gracious acknowledgement and warmth were truly reassuring and extremely appreciated. Wishing him the very best for his continued success! 🙏🏼
