Common bird in uncommon frame
SHIKRA

During my regular vulture counts I was climbing the rocks to get a sight of a hidden nest of vultures on the far side of the gorge. This beautiful individual came out of nowhere and sat right in front of me. The light and shadow were just perfect to highlight its colour and add drama to the image.

A Red-headed Vulture sub adult (5-6 months old) perched on a Flame of the forest tree.
This is my 3rd sub-adult sighting in 4 years which makes the only pair of red-headed vulture a successful breeder for the last 3 consecutive years.
I still am searching for their nests. I hope to find it soon.

Me and @pandeysriti got this amazing opportunity to explore the raw nature near Sanjay Dubri Tiger Reserve with @camp_banas.
The first and foremost thing to mention, MIND BLOWING! I am a nature freak and being there watching the rarest of the rare birds, butterflies and trees in such good numbers is enough to move my heart and soul.
Pristine white sand banks of river Banas, twinkling starry skies with millions of fireflies studded trees, scorpions, serenity and perfect temperature made this place a heaven.
Our host @ramkeshpatel ensured we felt at home.
Not to forget the food, the hospitality and the fun you will have here while talking to locals, host and other fellow travelers.

If I get an opportunity to choose where to live, my answer will always be Camp Banas.

MOST UNEXPECTED FIND
Drosera burmannii is one of the fastest-moving sundews. Its tentacles can bend toward trapped prey within seconds to minutes, helping secure the insect before digestion begins.
Family: Droseraceae
* Type: Carnivorous plant
* Size: Usually forms a small rosette about 2–5 cm across.
* Prey: Mainly tiny insects such as gnats, ants, and flies.
* Trap mechanism: Leaves are covered with sticky glandular hairs that trap insects. The leaf can curl around prey to aid digestion.
* Habitat: Open, sunny areas with nutrient-poor, moist soils, including grasslands, lateritic plateaus, and seasonal wetlands.
* Distribution in India: Found in several states, especially in the Western Ghats and other regions with seasonal wetlands.

WHITE EYE BUZZARD comfortably perched on a flame of the forest (Palash in Hindi, Chiula in Bagheli) tree.
A common bird finding its range along the farmland and forest fringes is now not so easy to see.

The cinereous vulture is very large: adults measure about 110–120 cm (roughly 3–4 ft) from head to tail, have a wingspan of approximately 2.5–3.0 metres (8–10 ft), and typically weigh between about 6 and 12 kg (some records up to ~14 kg), making it one of the heaviest and largest Old World vultures and among the largest birds of prey worldwide.
The body is dark brown to black, often with a dull bluish or silvery sheen on the wings and back, and the head and neck are almost bare with grey‑black skin, an adaptation to stay clean while feeding on carcasses. Its massive, hooked beak is extremely strong, built for tearing tough skin, tendons, and flesh, and the legs are relatively stout, helping it to stand and walk on the ground when feeding. Its intelligence is demonstrated through its unique stone-throwing behavior to break open large eggs like ostrich eggs, and its ability to roll wool with sticks when building nests. This intelligence represents a combination of innate and learned components—the throwing technique itself is genetically programmed, as captive birds reared without adults still instinctively throw stones and selectively choose egg-shaped objects, but they must learn that ostrich eggs contain food through experience. The vulture’s intelligence also shows in its highly varied opportunistic diet, feeding on carrion, small mammals, insects, eggs, and even mammal feces, and its adaptability to diverse habitats from deserts to farmlands to urban areas. Unlike larger vultures that rely on strength, the Egyptian vulture uses intelligence and agility to access food, and it can fly up to 80 kilometers daily searching for scarce resources, making it one of the most adaptive and intelligent scavengers among birds.

Weird Name I know
The Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus) is a distinctively small scavenger known for its intelligence and historic cultural significance. Often referred to as the “pharaoh’s chicken” or “white scavenger vulture,” it holds a unique position in the avian world as one of the few birds that uses tools.
